UK QUARTERBACKS COACH AT PEACE AFTER LEAVING VOLS

By Chip Cosby

HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER

Saturday
Kentucky at Tennessee
When: 12:30 p.m.
TV: WKYT-27

For 22 years, Randy Sanders spent his Saturdays bleeding orange.

He lettered as a quarterback at the University of Tennessee from 1984-88, then worked his way up the ladder from a volunteer assistant to a successful coordinator who ran the UT offense when it beat Florida State for the national championship in 1999.
But all those years and successes went up in smoke late last fall. The Vols were in the midst of their first losing season in 17 years when Sanders, who had been facing heavy criticism, resigned as offensive coordinator.

Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks quickly snapped up Sanders to fill the vacant quarterbacks-coach spot on his staff. And Sanders will spend this Saturday like he did so many others: on the sideline at Neyland Stadium.

Except this time, blue blood will be running through his veins.

"I'll know where the visitors' locker room is, and I probably won't need a pass to get on the field," Sanders joked.

Woodson is good though.......I don't think he's GREAT but he's definitely got some talent....But who have they really beaten this year other than Georgia?

They didn't beat UGA, Vandy did.
They beat UGA by a field goal......I know Vandy beat them too.....I think they beat UGA....I'm almost certain they did because I remember them announcing it at the LSU game that weekend and the stadium went crazy

It's funny because I consider myself a NCAA football fan and I think I keep up with SEC football bigtime. But for some reason I tend to always forget about KY being an SEC school. hmmmm

They've actually had a decent year this year....And Bowl Season for them is a good season.....It's going to be nice to own them in football this year and then turn around and tear 'em up on the court as well

I didn't know they had left mediocrity.

They haven't. They should thank the football gods that the perfect storm of a 12 game season, both Mississippi schools, Vandy, and the worst Georgia team in two decades all happened in the same year.

Oh, and also that Central Michigan and the University of Louisiana at Somewhere-that-starts-with-an-M are really, really bad on defense.

OTOH, we played Florida at the Swamp, Louisville at the Pizza Pit, LSU at Death Valley, and will play UT at Neyland. That's a pretty murderous road schedule.

Considering that we're a building program, an easier schedule helps to gain some momentum. Doesn't profit you to get slaughtered every year.

I don't expect most UT fans to see the improvement- we haven't been on TV much this year, so it's understandable.

Anyone can see the slight improvement, you're just not going to get many people around here to admit it. :)

Living in Kentucky, I know much more about Kentucky football than I should.

They have improved on offense, and Woodson looks surprisingly good. They have outplayed the teams against which they are even with in talent level or better, which they happened to get 6 times on their schedule this year. The problem is that, in the case of Vandy and the Mississippi twins, it is because of the low talent level on those teams rather than a dramatic improvement in Lexington. I just don't think the Cats have the guns.

In looking at the 22 man roster, I don't see a single player that has an advantage over a single Volunteer on a UT team that has some well-documented weaknesses. The most likely candidates are Burton and Little, and Micah Johnson has the chance to be a very good player in a couple of years, but at this point, I would rather have our receivers, our backs, and our linebackers.

Kentucky has improved, to the point where they out-lasted the OOC patsies on the schedule, the 3 teams with losing records in the SEC, and pulled the upset against a .500 Georgia team. I just don't see where they are ready to step up and challenge the big boys.
