What was he supposed to do... be on the beaches of LA with dish detergent and hand towels cleaning off oil soaked ducks?

There is an in between.

My primary beef is the rhetoric (its my responsibility) followed by detachment and blaming of BP.

The crap today about BP running ads and paying dividends was pure political theater. It does nothing to help. Launching criminal investigations on the company you are relying on to solve the problem puts them in massive CYA mode.

The shore clean up and spill containment are activities where the Feds can mobilize forces then send the bill to BP.

Oil hit Pensacola today and no crews were insight.

The Feds have some capabilities relevant to containment but they haven't been sufficiently mobilized.

That's OK. When the disaster started he left it in capable hands to manage the response... No wait.

The interior secretary's chief of staff went on a trip to the Grand Canyon last week as the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico worsened, marking the second time in recent months that a top-level official has taken off in the middle of a major security incident.

Tom Strickland, who serves as chief of staff to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, had to cut his trip short as the administration upped its response to the spill. A Park Service helicopter was used to airlift him out of the canyon and bring him directly to the Gulf.

ABC News first reported that Strickland was on the trip with his wife and that it included a white-water rafting excursion.

Must be nice to up and fly where ever you want for lunch.

and people called Bush the "Imperial President"

I'm sure it's getting harder and harder for most intelligent Obama voters to be able to defend their vote. The man is a lightweight, both intellectually and politically.

I always find it comical when the very people who want the government out of their lives, start complaining about the government not doing enough.

However for the record, I disagree with how this was all handled and continues to be handled.

Reason for government is to protect the nation from outside forces, whether that be from natural or man made causes or invasion. This government seems to want to protect themselves from the people.

the federal government has a part to play, one of those is "promote the general welfare", which doesn't mean wealth redistribution, it means doing things that benefit everybody regardless of economic or political status.

I don't know why the delineation of government responsibility is hard to grasp. Nobody has said that the government should have no role in our lives. It is the limit of the role that is in question.

I don't want government to overstep there bounds just take care of the responsibilities they do have, ya know, protect the border (see Arizona), my rights, not forcing me against my will to buy a product(healthcare), Protecting us from harm foreign and domesticate( underwear bomber, mexican drug cartel illegals, timesquare bombers,

freedom of speech( propaganda machines such as NBC, huffington post, NYT,etc..) anyone who doesnt think they had an immense affect of why this unknown , unexperienced man was elected to president really should rethink things. GE , which owns NBS,MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo , stands to make billions-trillions if this cap and trade and green initiatives are passed. It really is all about the Green, only its about Money not the Planet.

And Barry will use this crisis to help get some of his clean energy initiatives passed as he burns thousands of gallons of fuel a day flying all over the country to have hotwings in NY and them play golf half way across the country. Makes sense doesnt it?

I voted for Bill Clinton in 1992. We're all subject to brief moments of stupidity, so I have hope that some Obama voters have had, or will have, a similar epiphany.

Understandable but there is an important distinction. The government certainly has a role to play in emergency/disaster situations. I think they should be mobilizing teams (Nat'l guard?) to coastal areas to prep for oil clean up and be working the waters for containment. Bill BP. Even if they don't pay (due to bankruptcy, etc.) this would be a legit use of tax payer $ as is immediate natural disaster relief.

Where I (we?) want the government out is our daily lives and market distortions. Social justice via government action is my main beef.

In short, I doubt you'll find many conservatives that are against government doing anything or are opposed to regulation. It is about the where and how more than anything.

Wish I would have archived all the Bush defenses around here when Katrina happened. I could probably insert them right in this thread with some name changes.

It's all perspective. Like Bush with Katrina, Obama's handling of this is completely substandard.

the primary difference being that with Katrina, you had state and local officials claiming that they had a handle on things. Despite that, federal resources were mobilized within a week when it became apparent that Ray Nagin and Kathleen Blanco were completely inept. You will remember the difference in reaction to Hurricane Gustav. Had Louisiana had similar leadership in 2005, the loss of life would have been considerably less.

This oil spill occurred in a part of the Gulf that made it a federal responsibility from the outset.

Everyone and their mother knew the hurricane was going to hit, and it was going to be bad a full week before it happened. Period. The national guard and coast guard were the only ones with the resources and capabilities to deal with it. The levees breaking was a real possibility and everybody was screaming this for a week. I'm not too familiar with Gustav, but I don't think the levees failed like with Katrina...certainly not on the same magnitude. Placing blame squarely on the shoulders of local government for lack of leadership is bogus.

Besides, what I referring to is Bush's complete lack of interest in it until it got bad. Just the same as Obama with this oil spill. The hurricane hit fast and hard, the oil spill is a long process and nobody will know the final proprotion of disaster until it is all over. Considering this, both timelines by Bush and Obama should be weighted equally. Both of which, have handled these respective disasters inadequately.

From my POV, arguing that Katrina faults shouldn't have fallen on the federal government and the oil spill should is disengenious, at best. Federal leadership failed in both instances.
