Raymond berry had spececial shoe for a short leg but him and unitas made some history. This kid played a lot of soccer growing up. How does that translate to football? Conditioning of course but anything else?
11.49 is a decent time 23.2 is decent as well for a football player for perspective at high school level sub 23 in the 200 is competitive and sub 11 is fast for the 100 in track. Sub 12 sub 24 is really good for a football player especially a 'raw' one. But track speed does not always translate on the field. Some guys have football speed and from is Tapope onis is one of those. Its not just about point a to point b there is a lot of change in direction in football and it matters. If you told people that defended him in the NFL Jerry Rice ran a 4.7.1 they'd think you were crazy. Maybe that's why JJ is making folks look silly because they pay attention to his 40 time?

Raymond Berry had special shoes for a short leg. Said he had 80+ moves to get open. Made some history with Unitas. You think his soccer background helps?

Soccer translates for much more than just conditioning. Spatial awareness, hand eye, reaction time, quick feet, coordination, to name a few. Granted some of that is sports in general. Ironically soccer and basketball translate well to each other with many of the same spacing, give and goes, moving without the ball, and much more.

Soccer would translate more that a lot of sports would.

Sad but some high schools in our area discourage multisport athletes when our kids were in school. Basketball coach here expected year round basketball. Baseball and basketball (no football here) share a lot but the competition for playing time on the court discouraged some good athletes .

Change of direction also. Actually, I would think for a db and defensive players soccer is a really good second sport. Angle of pursuit, body control there is a lot there.

Yes. How many times do you hear " took a bad angle" during football season? Did you see any of the GT FSU game today? Good game. Suited me just fine.

Footwork. My wife coaches basketball and she loves coaching girls who also play soccer because they understand footwork. Just as wrestlers understand leverage.

Footwork for a CB is crucial. His soccer background is certainly a positive here.

Wrestlers and linemen . lot of crossover there .What age girls does she coach? I realize how old I am when I remember watchig girls high school 3 on 3 half court offense, defense games. Long time ago.

Its what our girls teams played Class of ‘76
I remember Pat fighting hard to get TSSAA to adopt the full court game.
If I remember correctly Iowa was the last state to stop playing half court games. Late 80s maybe 90-92 not sure.

And angles. Soccer players naturally understand angles when defending.

7-8 grade. She’s coached everything from 5th grade through high school. I enjoy watching her kids develop.

Those are pretty mediocre 100m and 200m times for an upper tier athlete, but the long jump is really good. So, it suggests he's explosive and the sprint times are probably off.

Track numbers are overrated in a sense. If you are fundamentally sound and know how to play your position at a high level, that will trump track speed times.

Or he has a very low lactic threshold which wouldn’t translate to football much anyway. Unless he’s grabbing a pick and running it back 80 yds.

Without watching his 100 and 200 but seeing LJ as being explosive then one reasonable theory is that he gets out with great starts but can’t sustain the speed over 100m.

And before anyone who doesn’t understand track or sprinting the 100m and up, NO human being maintains top speed for 100m. Yes that includes Bolt. The reason he looks like he gets faster the whole way is because he starts slower, has a higher high end speed and loses his speed in the maintenance phase slower. So has everyone slows down, he’s still getting up to top speed AND THEN slows down slower than the rest. It’s biologically impossible to maintain highest end speed for 100m.

So one explanation for Onis is exactly what I said.

In the end it doesn’t mean squat for football. It’s MUCH more important to be snappy quick, (many NFL skill position players) then not snappy but have a higher end speed. You rarely get to display high end speed in FB over say more than 20-30yds. Those plays are very rare. It’s what you are within 5-20 yds that matters. Thats why even 40s aren’t as big of an indicator for FB as say 20s would be. Thats why the scouts break down 40s.

If I remember right Javan (sp?) Kearse had one of the fastest first 10-20m EVER at the combine. His first couple steps were beyond insane for not only a DE but any football player at any position. And THAT is what matters.

Soccer doesn’t translate as well to football as volleyball does, but good points.
