Schools eye beer sales for help

I'm not a big fan of sitting near people who have been pounding whiskey for three hours. Beer sales would eliminate most of that.

Not really ........most of the fans aren't waiting to get inside the stadium to drink . They have already been pounding whiskey for the past 3-6 hours .

They're drinking whiskey outside the stadium for the same reason they drink it inside -- it's easier to hide.

All I know is every single time I go to an SEC game, where alcohol is banned both inside and outside and no one is drinking openly, I see people who are bombed out of their minds being dragged out by the cops. I almost never see anyone like that at an NFL game, where everyone sits around openly drinking beer before and during the game. The alcohol ban leads directly to vastly higher consumption of hard liquor, which leads to vastly drunker people.

You need to also consider the average age at an NFL game vs a UT game. Its not really a fair comparison. I get smashed at the docks before we walk up and drink during the game as well but am an adult in my mid 40s like many would be at an NFL game. When I see someone being dragged out of Neyland usually it is an underclassman that has been binge-drinking all night and day before the game.

I think your comparison is valid as a truth but I think there are circumstances that make NFL games a different animal.

Personally like I said I could care less because I do not drink beer, I drink Makers Mark and would still bring my own even if they sold beer lol. Been doing it for over 25 years and have yet to have anyone hassle me but then again I act like I have some sense.

No... The University would take on a big liability if beer was served at the games. Time will tell but don't see this happening in the near future.

sell a beer for 10-12 bucks....put more KPD in stadium to pull out and jail those who become beligerants. Everybody makes $$$, university, city, attorneys, insurance companies, etc.

I take my grandchildren to the games I attend. There is enough drunks there without selling beer. Attending a college ballgame should be as family friendly as possible. Just an old man's opinion.

I get this side of the argument as well. Just don't think people will be any drunker than they already are just because they sell beer inside

As everyone does at Vol Nation, on a question such as this we can only SPECULATE how alcohol-drinking fans would respond to beer sales in Neyland.

What we can KNOW is how we would personally respond to beer sales.

For me, selling beer would not impact pre-game or game behavior. For over 30 years I've enjoyed sipping Blanton's or Patron for a few hours in Circle Park before getting to my seats prior to those snare drum beats that signal the band is taking the field.

Regardless, anytime this discussion comes up (here or elsewhere), my thoughts go to those who've been truly impacted by game day drinking...I witnessed the tragedy at the Dome involving a young UT fan in 2012. It's one of those things you can't 'un-see'.

Sorry, don't mean to be a downer. On the upside, my Ole Miss tickets arrived in the mail yesterday! Side line seats at about the 20. Our first visit to The Grove. I don't imagine there will be any drinking there! :)

GBO!!

Its stupid for these schools NOT to sell beer at games............its not like everyone isnt getting lit up anyway in the parking lot. Makes sense to financially capitalize on it.

This. Would definitely help get out of the red

I hope not ........most fans are drunk enough as it is

Everyone I have ever gone to a game with drinks excessively on the front end because we know we only have a toddy or two to hold us over through the game.

When I go to pro-events, I still pre-party but never get nearly as drunk as I do for college games.

Same here. Back around that same year, I made a bet with somebody that I could kill the last quarter of a fifth straight. I did it. But you don't want to know the series of events that followed.

Ouch! I can't imagine but I'm glad for your decision after the fact. :salute:

Alcohol should not be sold at large sporting events.
Look at what is happening in Europe.
Fans are killing each other.
Would you take your kids where a lot of people are drinking and some drunk.
Nada.

So you do not take your kids to Vol games now? Just a question but if you take kids to any good restaurant that has a bar, the beach, the lake (especially lol), a concert or just about anything outside a church event and there are people there drinking and or drunk.

Just my opinion but I think exposure trumps sheltering and I do not think anyone would be any less or more drunk at UT games if they sold beer in the stadium.

Hell most of the other Vol Navy folks I know sort of use the game as a chill out period between pre-game drinking and post-game drinking. I usually only bring enough in for a couple stiff ones and the second half is time to catch the "second wind" before heading back down to the docks for round 2.

Did he understand thats why you were acting the way you were?

:)

That didn't occur until 2 years ago in Athens when Corderrelle Patterson scored on a reverse. A UGA frat boy went nuts asking what happened and I took it upon myself to explain that "our guy went right, cut left, spun around your safety, took out his 5 stars, turned them sideways, stuck them up the defense's ass and scored!"

Btw. Helpful hint . . . Don't act like that in a skybox if you ever want to go back.
