I really see us promoting from within here.
Probably, but surely Schwartz will stay thru the tournament? If he's the kind that leaves a job unfinished and abandons the players, I'll be greatly disappointed....not that he'll give a chit. Still, you either have character or you don't.

In a press conference a few days ago, right after Cuonzo was fired, Barnes talked about how much he liked CM and said something to the effect of “if I had a place, I’d hire him”

Would rather not. Kind of a sour hire with all the names that should be interested in the job.

I think experience and connections will drive the hire. McDonald has those things:

“His G League (then known as the D League) coaching career began as an assistant with the league champion Austin Spurs in 2012. In 2013, he was promoted to head coach, and he led the organization in that role from 2013-17—a run that included two Western Conference Finals appearances.

Immediately prior to his time in the NBA G League, McDonald spent four years as the head coach at Western Kentucky from 2008-12. The Hilltoppers logged a pair of 20-win campaigns under his direction and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009.

McDonald also has a lengthy relationship with USA Basketball. He was an assistant coach and advance scout with the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup gold-medal-winning team, and he also did advance scouting work for the men’s senior national team during the 2019 FIBA World Championships in Shanghai, China.”

I thought that Buzz should have hired Devoe had he stayed one more year. But I don’t think it would work with Cuonzo. Too much butt hurt still on both sides… CCM and a minority of dumb fans that wanted to blow him out.

I love Frank Martin, but he is probably not coming here to be an assistant coach. He will get a head coaching job, imo
If there isn't one appealing to him this year maybe he'd consider a 1 year gig as an assistant and wait for one he wants to open up. Right now I don't really see one that makes much sense.

Congrats Coach, good luck at ECU.

I don't see a scenario where CM is returning to TN, too much bad blood I think. Not sure about Frank Martin. He and Barnes seem to have a genuine friendship. At Barnes age I could see a former head coach coming here as an assistant in hopes of taking over when Barnes retires.

Do former head coaches typically take asst positions?

I don't think he'd come here after all the controversy when he left. You can tell the guys really liked this coach. This is going to be a tough loss.

Gainey and Clark haven’t been having nearly the impact or high profile that Lanier, Oliver, English, and Schwartz have had. Unless McDonald is promoted as an equal I’d guess another young up and comer is added. “Associate” head coach will be vacant unless one of the fired head coach retreads come in for a year or two of rehab.
