Scotty Hopson

Scotty will never play in the NBA unless he gets rid of his sorry ass attitude. He has one of the softest games I've seen for guys with his talent. He'd be nuts to go pro after this year.

What attitude? The problems I see are that he is too tentative b/c of a lack of confidence in his shot and he doesn't play much D. I don't see an attitude problem. I see a confidence issue and a lack of tenacity on defense.

The problem with kids that have talent like Hopson is the fans and media. We hype them up, and tell them their the greatest. When they hit college they think they are automatically going to be special. They think because they were the #1 recruit in HS and ESPN said they would be a star they do not have to work like the "walk-on" or the kid who was only a 2 star recruit. I am only 24 but I would say its safe to assume when Micheal Jordan signed on at NC nobody really knew who he was, he HAD to work hard to be the best so people knew his name. I would rather have a walk-on who gave everything he has and them some, then a 5 star player who feels like he is owed something. I will say the same for football as well! Hopefully Hopson learns you have to work for what you want in life, its not just handed to you.

Hopson is way to weak to play in the NBA...He is a terrible defender and he is way to inconsistent with his shot..
Zero ball handling skills, cant finish real good around the rim, and poor Free throw shooter...
Tyler Smith got arrested with guns and has a better chance of making it into the NBA then Hopson does right now.

Woolridge and Williams should just pack their bags and go home...They are horrible....I mean Orlando must be sitting at home covering his eyes everytime his son starts to square up and shoot the ball...He has no hands what so ever...everytime a pass comes his way it hits his hands and he drops it or turns it over...I would rather see Pearl play than Woolridge...

He is so tentative. Reminds me a lot of Stanley Robinson from Uconn. Shows flashes but disappears. I think Bruce needs to run the offense through him and Chism and make it a priority. That will give him more confidence and I think he will excel
Stanley is way ahead of Scotty. Robinson is not scared to go to the rim

Is it just me or is Scotty Hopson a roller coaster ride. He seems to be up and down in different weeks. This kid was the number 3 recruit coming out of high school, and has not played like the 200th best recruit in the nation. He needs to be more aggressive and attack the basket more.

I'm starting to realize why Scotty Hopson is so up and down! He is playing completely out of position! He doesn't have the handle to play 2 guard if Pearl's not going to change the offense and make him a catch and shoot 2 guard! In my eyes Hopson still has a wealth of potential, but it is all as a poor man's version of Vince Carter at SF!!! He could do the step back and shoot, sit on the wing and wait for the kick if we ever get a PG who can penetrate, and when he's playing that game he could put a move on a player that closes out too hard and monster dunk! Scotty Hopson should be playing SF and I think CBP will move him there next year when JP is gone. Next year I expect this starting lineup:

PG Melvin Goins
SG Cameron Tatum
SF Scotty Hopson
PF Tobias Harris
C Kenny Hall

Bench:
PG Trae Golden
SG Jordan McCrae
SF Orlando Woolridge
PF Maymon
C Brian Williams

Scotty should gain more muscle in this second offseason and that should help him take stiffer SFs off the dribble.
I could see Golden or McCrae starting if either of them can penetrate and show one on one skills, because that starting lineup is devoid of that very thing. No penetrators (man beaters)!

Pearl needs to jerk him out of the starting lineup. I don't know who'd be the 1 and who would be the 2, but I'm starting to think Maze and Goins would give us a better chance to win. Maybe it would wake Scotty up, but I just get a feeling that he wouldn't even care. Heck, once Cam gets back, I'd give him the starting 2 spot for sure.
I agree maybe he needs to spend some time on the bench. Maze and Goins are playing great and at least they are playing hard. We don't even know if Hopson is in a slump or not, because he does nothing but stand around and doesn't look for his shot. Time for him and Woolridge to go to the bench for a while. Tired of seeing Woolridge shoot 3's that barely hit the rim.

I'm sorry for this post but, it is time for Scotty (Houdini) Hopson to grow up. I see so much greatness in this kid, however you have to be watching at the exact 5 seconds of a particular game to really appreciate his talent. Bruce is not putting any pressure on him in my opinion. That has got to change, it's time for him to become accountable to his rating.

I agree, I don't see how Hopson could ever play at the next level. He could really get pushed for minutes next year if doesn't become stronger and more aggresive.

I really think Bruce needs to shrink his bench. If the guys are really in great condition like everyone says Bruce's team are in, it shouldn't be a problem. Pearl and McBee should only be seeing clean up minutes at this point. Not because they are "walk-ons" because Pearl does not have to be guarded and McBee just needs more time to develop his game.

Hopson just doesn't have the mindset to take over. You see the flashes, but he seems to want to just fit in. When you were a top ten recruit you better want the ball, and know what to do when you get it. I think Scotty and some others are afraid of getting their shots blocked, that is part of why we get no free throws. Drive the ball to the hoop and if you eat it fine, just do it again. Especially when we are behind. That stops the clock and gives us a chance to set up the defense. If we don't shoot 25 free throws a game something is wrong.

I spent time with Scotty and his "handlers" before he went to UT (Paulding Cnty, GA). Believe it ! He was soft then playing against a 6'4" "obese" guy. They said he would "mature" at TN ? Scotty either needs to man up and take over, or become "Dale Ellis". It's really up to him, he's got the game for sure ! I think he is laying back (personally). I think he is playing weak to not get hurt and not be a big issue. He thnks he can go Pro on his potential (prolly right). He even said to me one day, I dont need College... I'm already in the NBA.... PC B&G Club '08... We did a charity event.........

Become Dale Ellis? We should pray that this becomes so.

I have not seen that much of Hopson, but to be a special offensive player at the 2 or 3 spot you have to be an excellent ball handler and be able to beat a defender off the dribble. Indeed, the best teams in college basketball tend to have multiple guys who can score off the dribble--it's big. And, then, of course, you need the personal drive and desire to get better and become an excellent player.

If his first shot doesn't fall, he gives up. I hope he can turn things around. He's got all the talent in the world, but the "i don't care" attitude should not be tolerated by CBP.

whoa Tobias is in a totally different stratosphere. The competetion in KY high school basketball is weak. New York state is elite. night in and night out Tobias gets tested against those city kids. There is a reason Chris lofton was overlooked by KY amd Louisville they thought he was just a another product of a kid outshining average kids. Hopson clearly was THAT guy blowing up poor ole 6 foot pimply faced white kids. padding his stats. Not to say he cant finally overcome it but his clock is ticking.

I agree , but I don't think it's just Scotty. Our whole team needs to step back & look at the way they play. We have too much talent to be in the position we're in. We have beaten the #1 Kansas , & were capable of winning all of the games we've lost . We DON'T KNOW HOW TO CLOSE A GAME !!!!!

Closing a game is one thing but a couple of the losses have been starting the game on the road. The losses at Southern Cal, Vandy and georgia we were out of the game by the half. At least they stayed in this one.

Hopson is the most naturally athletic player TN has left, he simply just doesn't work hard. You can see it in his lack of defensive effort and his decisions to never move w/o the basketball.

I agree with most of your lineup. But I don't think that Tatum is any more of a SG than Hopson. I think the problem we have this year is that Hopson, Tatum, Woolridge and Prince are all more SF's than anything else. Honestly, McBee is the closest thing to a SG that we have on the team.

The thing that is most disappointing with Hopson is his total lack of effort on defense. You can always play hard on defense. Coach Pearl needs to get in his face and challenge him and if that does not work, put his lazy butt on the bench maybe that will send a message. He should be leading this team in scoring but just goes through the motions.
