My question to everyone is, by comparing our current commits to the guys we have graduating, are we closing the talent gap on our competition or are is it getting wider? I think even if we have a class full of 3 and 4 stars and Alabama pulls in the number 1 class again that our talent is still getting better when they are staying the same (mainly because we have few quality upperclassman). I think we are improving our roster this year and will be able to compete at a much higher level in the coming years. Another thing that could really help is good Quarterback play, does anyone think that the Colts make it to the Super Bowl last year without Peyton Manning? I'm not saying that Bray is going to be as good as Peyton, but with our receivers and some good Quarterback play I think we will be able to take our young talent and compete with anyone.

Here are the guys we will have to replace next year:

No Name Pos Ht Wt Year
89 Brent Slusher TE 6-4 254 Sr.
94 Minor Bowens DT 6-3 293 Sr.
52 Victor Thomas C 6-3 293 Sr.
18 Tyler Wolf DB 5-11 202 Sr.
45 Kevin Cooper FB 6-0 242 Sr.
74 Jarrod Shaw OG 6-4 331 Sr.
57 Gerald Williams DE 6-3 250 Sr.
96 Chad Cunningham P/PK 6-2 210 Sr.
43 Savion Frazier LB 6-0 221 Sr.
4 Gerald Jones WR 6-0 195 Sr.
26 Daniel Lincoln PK 6-0 210 Sr.
6 Denarius Moore WR 6-1 194 Sr.
56 Nick Reveiz LB 5-10 224 Sr.
88 Luke Stocker TE 6-6 253 Sr.
42 LaMarcus Thompson LB 6-1 228 Sr.
84 Chris Walker DE 6-3 245 Sr.

Starters are in BOLD.

Our Sr. and Jr. class are terrible right now!!! I think our freshman and sophmore classes are already a huge improvement! Solid recruits 2*,3*,4*,5* what ever, as long as our staff thinks they can play, but more importantly get to campus, get in make the grades and allow for full recruiting classes every year.

it will take more than one class to fill the gap

by the 3rd class...hopefully lol

The only ones I really worry about replacing are Stocker and Cooper. I think next year we should see equal play or improvement.

That is exactly the way I see it. If we can pull in at least a solid class this year I think we will see improvement next year in just about every position.

Biggest losses are Stocker, G. Jones, and Reveiz. These are all guys we are replacing in the long-run with this current class. Stocker - Clear, Downs, possibly Rome. G. Jones - Dallas, possibly Watkins, Arnett, and others. Reveiz - AJ Johnson, Harris. Losing Chris Walker hurts, but I like the way Smith and Miller are progressing.

I think with the past couple of classes and this class, we definitely have the quality in some players, but just lack the depth. CDD is obviously putting a priority on filling the voids, especially the depth issue. IMO, we are on the right track. I can give Kiffin a little credit with his first class and some of the guys CDD finished with. We've got a jump on the 2012 kids, and we have yet to see how CDD fairs with the officials after the season and the in-home visits.

Geez, you'll are right about the junior class, it is actually worse off than our seniors:

26 Robert Yonce DB 6-0 187 Jr.
9 Daryl Vereen LB 5-11 221 Jr.
98 Rae Sykes DT 6-4 270 Jr.
53 Jake Storey LB 5-10 219 Jr.
2 Matt Simms QB 6-3 217 Jr.
7 Mandela Shaw DB 6-0 193 Jr.
81 Mychal Rivera TE 6-4 240 Jr.
47 Chip Rhome P 6-3 200 Jr.
30 Shane Reveiz LB 5-9 218 Jr.
29 Stephaun Raines DB 5-10 182 Jr.
77 Cody Pope C 6-6 290 Jr.
28 Tauren Poole TB 5-11 213 Jr.

85 T.J. Marrs DS 5-10 206 Jr.
90 Ben Lehning TE 6-1 236 Jr.
40 Austin Johnson LB 6-2 231 Jr.
97 Malik Jackson DE 6-5 265 Jr.

59 Nick Guess DS 6-2 215 Jr.
38 C.J. Fleming DB 5-10 173 Jr.
25 Art Evans DB 6-0 185 Jr.
82 Cory Eichholtz WR 5-8 183 Jr.
12 Chris Eggert WR 5-10 205 Jr.
41 Sam Edgmon FB 5-11 237 Jr.
33 LaDarius Denson LB 6-0 245 Jr.
39 Ben Bartholomew TE 6-1 247 Jr.
36 Anthony Anderson DB 6-0 185 Jr.

Projected starters for next year are in BOLD, I think this may have been the worst recruiting class in Tennessee history.

The good news about this class is that we are in some studs for 2012, (assuming that the world doesn't end) we may be able to replace these guys with a very highly ranked class.

Jesus, the Junior class was a lost year, considering that Rivera, Malik Johnson, and Simms all did not come in until THIS YEAR.

Besides having bodies in practice, the team wouldn't be much worse if they didn't recruit a single player that year.

Ditto. I think that these two classes finally graduating will be a breath of fresh air. Out with the old, in with the new.

Yep, one error though, you forgot about Stone, Pair, and Fulton. One will most likely replace Shaw on the line instead of a freshman. We are gonna be stacked and very good on the OL in the future.

Hopefully we can find a Tight End that can catch the ball or block!
Right now Stocker is doing neither!

I'm not ready to call Stocker a loss this year. Not many are turning heads in this offense.

Seriously though, just look at that junior class. No top program can afford to do that. It was basically a lost year. We've got a long ways to go friends.

I think most would agree that our talent level will improve with even modest recruiting success. The problem is that the schools we are competing against are, and have been, enjoying tremendous recruiting success. If we are catching these schools, it's because they have no where to go but down. But, that's a product of being in the best conference.

Will we be getting better than we are now? Probably. Are we gaining on most other teams in the SEC? Probably not.

We aren’t gaining on anyone talent wise. This class and maybe next year is about getting the numbers back up. After that, we really need to upgrade the level of athlete that we’re recruiting. Classes like this year’s class are not going to be winning anything of significance if many of the skill position players are starting for Tennessee.

I think Stocker can and will turn his season around and when he does it should turn our offense around.

Maybe better talent-wise, but:

It is sad that out of a class only Art Evans, Poole, and Austin Johnson are ever going to contribute.

I think we'll be sadly lacking in Sr. leadership next year!

Simms & Poole on offense?

Johnson, Martin, & Evans on defense?

Ouch! :mf_surrender:
