Screw stars...is recruiting making us better?

Seriously though, just look at that junior class. No top program can afford to do that. It was basically a lost year. We've got a long ways to go friends.

Yep remember that day well. I and many other fans swallowed hard when the day ended and Fulmer had missed on all the key DL and OL that he was recruiting and closed out with several roster spots unfilled. To add insult to injury, the best player in that class was promptly dismissed and the QB decided to play baseball. Many on here commented that that was going to leave an ugly hole in our roster. Little did we know that the 'great' 2007 class would have so much attrition and disappointment on top of the none existing 2008 class turning that roster hole into a crater. And now we are suffering the reality of that failed recruiting. You could see it coming but you can't ever quite prepare for the feeling when the inevitable bad season(s) come as a result. Just kind of leaves you numb and longing for better days.

My question to everyone is, by comparing our current commits to the guys we have graduating, are we closing the talent gap on our competition or are is it getting wider? I think even if we have a class full of 3 and 4 stars and Alabama pulls in the number 1 class again that our talent is still getting better when they are staying the same (mainly because we have few quality upperclassman). I think we are improving our roster this year and will be able to compete at a much higher level in the coming years. Another thing that could really help is good Quarterback play, does anyone think that the Colts make it to the Super Bowl last year without Peyton Manning? I'm not saying that Bray is going to be as good as Peyton, but with our receivers and some good Quarterback play I think we will be able to take our young talent and compete with anyone.

Here are the guys we will have to replace next year:

No Name Pos Ht Wt Year
89 Brent Slusher TE 6-4 254 Sr.
94 Minor Bowens DT 6-3 293 Sr.
52 Victor Thomas C 6-3 293 Sr.
18 Tyler Wolf DB 5-11 202 Sr.
45 Kevin Cooper FB 6-0 242 Sr.
74 Jarrod Shaw OG 6-4 331 Sr.
57 Gerald Williams DE 6-3 250 Sr.
96 Chad Cunningham P/PK 6-2 210 Sr.
43 Savion Frazier LB 6-0 221 Sr.
4 Gerald Jones WR 6-0 195 Sr.
26 Daniel Lincoln PK 6-0 210 Sr.
6 Denarius Moore WR 6-1 194 Sr.
56 Nick Reveiz LB 5-10 224 Sr.
88 Luke Stocker TE 6-6 253 Sr.
42 LaMarcus Thompson LB 6-1 228 Sr.
84 Chris Walker DE 6-3 245 Sr.

Starters are in BOLD.

That's frightening.

That is exactly the way I see it. If we can pull in at least a solid class this year I think we will see improvement next year in just about every position.

But the question will be who backs up the new starters. Won't we be just as thin as we are this year with inexperienced talent?

I think the big difference between this season & next year is that we won't be absolutely desperate next year.

A prime example would be walk-on Joseph Ayres at DT.

I'm really glad he is on the team this year, but I don't think he will see much playing time next year.

I think most people had never heard of him until after he played in a game.

Heard something the other day about not that many 5 and 4 stars from rivals this year. Could that explain some of our 3 star gets at this point? Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere.
