Season Loses and recruiting

now that is some optimism, according to rivals UT is ranked #35 in class rankings...that would be a considerable jump.

It's September. Generally teams make considerable jumps from now until signing day. We only have half of our class filled. We're leading/top 3-5 for 10+ big time prospects. Top 15, book it.

My mistake. I was unaware that the recruiting services were going to allocate points to UT for being in a prospect's Top 3-5.

NO CHANCE we finish in the Top 15 or Top 10 in recruiting this year.

Want to make a ban bet that they won't be in the top 15?

Look at it this way...Vanderbilt...good school academics..etc..there coach can recruit players and tell them that they want to make a run at the BCS National championship game..does this really matter to a recruit? After all they are in the SEC...playing time...but they do not land the recruits like we do at this point. It is a selling feature. Not that I am comparing us to Vandy by any means...but think about it. Wins matter...if not our recruiting will drop off significantly. Period.

Do you realize what you have to do to go there? It's not like they just admit anybody.

But....Saban had a history at LSU...head coach of the Dolphins in NFL...that is a great selling point to a recruit. I like Dooley and think he can do this...but just saying...what do we have to sell right now besides playing time..tradition..Neyland.. When a high profile recruit could go to florida, alabama, texas, osu, usc...etc. Resume wise...play for saban his first year with LSU and NFL credentials or DD. I want us back at the top...but DD was put in a bad spot..to clean up Fulmer and X mess. I was impressed with the D last game and we havent been that agressive on D in YEARS..I see changes..it just might take longer than we think. hope not..just being realistic.

First, that is something to sell. Along with quality coaches, VFL (to parents), SEC, facilities, etc. You guys act like there is no reason a recruit would want to choose UT when in fact there are several. One of the ONLY things we can't sell right now is that we're not winning the SEC every other year. Other than that, we've got a lot to offer.

Secondly, you named five schools. What's that? 125 players on scholarship every year. Not to mention that OSU has gotten it's butt handed to them twice by SEC teams and USC can't even play in the postseason for two years. Sounds like we have about as much going for us as those two teams right now. As a matter of fact, one player left X to come play for us.

Recruiting is not our problem - my offhand guess is there are 15+ teams in the top 25 that have had fewer 4/5 star guys than UT the last 4 years - we've lost a lot of talent - misevaluated a lot of talent - and not developed players well

VaTech beat us last year with far fewer "talented" players

We need a coach and a QB, not more 4 stars - hopefully we have one of the two now

Look i know were on the rebound but not one team in the SEC east has looked that impressive besides maybe South Carolina is it really that hard to believe but we could have a chance to win the east? we win against florida and were in the drivers seat basically we have to play lsu and bama after that. We are most likely goin to lose to bama but we usually beat South Carolina every year and vandy and Kentucky, if we can beat florida and run the ball down georgia's throat they allowed a freshman to rush for over 170 yards look what we did to Oregen in the 1st half running the ball i might be the only one that thinks this but i think we have a shot at heading to Atlanta even if im the only one if im wrong feel free to tell me what you think

There aren't any recruits that don't remember when Tennessee was at least a contender for the SEC title. It was just three years ago. We're not exactly Minnesota, where they have a gazillion national and Big Ten titles, but none that you remember unless you're over 60.

And it didn't seem to hurt Alabama in recruiting when they were coming off seasons like 3-8 and 4-9, and were coached by a nitwit to boot.

What will matter is whether or not Tennessee improves over the course of the season, and potential recruits have a chance to see how our many young starters develop. If we look bad in November, then there's cause for concern, and for a lot of reasons other than just recruiting. But that's not worth speculating on until then, and then only if that happens.

Good post. No coach is around forever, and all colleges have their up and down days. Bama wasn't much until Saban. Before Spurrier, UF wasn't much. UT's history and tradition is a huge plus, and we haven't been down for nearly as long as these other colleges.

i say we would be alright if we pull off a couple of surprize wins... a south carolina and georgia win could give this staff some credit that if they get the right players in then they can win championships... if the staff plays this right and explains to recruits that we are rebuilding they might be able to pull some good guys. we have young playmakers on the roster... so we just need some solid linemen and some good roster depth.

So you agree that recruits that are concerned about winning probably don't want to come to UT for the next two years. You just naively think that winning isn't important to the majority of the most talented players in the nation.

Go find me some recruits who are JUST concerned with winning, and you'll have your justification. Wins are just icing on the top for hard work, and most if not all recruits know this. Stop trying to stir the pot.

They problem is if we keep losing games will recruits ( high profile) want to come here? Put aside history, tradition..some of these young guys do not remember these days. I know we have great facilities that help sell recruits but does this matter that much to a young person. If a school has great facilities but bats .500 every season compared to a school that has subpar facilities but bates .900 every season and wins a bowl game...what would you do? Yes we offer playing time in the SEC but if you were an 18 yr old ( leave aside that your blood runs orange) would you not want to play for a winning program? I just hope that this season will not hurt recruiting. A FL win would help out tremoundosly. Remember..we have a great COMMITTED class for next year BUT they havent signed yet.

See Alabama '07 season followed by Alabama '08 class. As further examples, see USC '02 season followed by 2003 class. Both top-5 classes following mediocre or poor seasons. There's plenty more of those across the landscape. A good recruiter will bring in the recruits independent of the season.

USC won the Pac-10, won their BCS bowl in a landslide, and finished #4 in the nation in 2002. They also produced a Heisman Trophy winner.

With the state of the program/team, the coaching staff needs to be stressing togetherness amongst the team. If they create a family environment, recruits will love to see that, they will want to be apart of something like that.

We should all know by now that it doesn't matter what rank your class is if you can't get the players at positions of need. Our biggest needs are OL/DL and they usually aren't rated as high as skill players, so naturally our ranking might be lower than usual. But I'm fine with that bc you build a football team around a strong OL & DL, atleast you do in the SEC.

The bar is lower now, and that may be a good thing in recruiting. If Dooley can pull an upset and get to 6-6 and a bowl game, a lot of recruits will be impressed.

Saban's first year he beat us and went 6-6. The next they were in the SEC C. It will be a little harder at Tennessee because of instate talent, but they could still do very well.

Problem is no one knows what to expect of Dooley.

I'm not so concerned with anything besides getting kids to commit to add depth. Top 15 is better than top 10 if ut lands a good amount of big uglies vs skill players which usually rate higher. Anybody that watched last week can see the first stringers could compete. The mind set vs adversity and depth is the problem right now. I'm sure Dooley will do alright in recruiting with a 6-6. I don't understand the panic unless the blow outs continue. It was a very talented Oregon team with a high ass tempo. Most teams usually don't line up that fast.

Good post totally agree! Dooley will bring quality players and bring this program back to where it belongs. Recruits will look at history and the fact that they will get a chance to play some coming in.:clapping:
