BA's 2/21 Reviews
In the series we highlighted in Weekend Preview, Tennessee broke open a 3-2 game with five runs in the seventh, then held off UNLVs five-run rally in the ninth to win 8-7. Vols senior Nick Williams (6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) out-pitched UNLV preseason All-American Erick Fedde (6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 K), and Nick Senzel hit a grand slam to highlight Tennessees big seventh inning.
Tyler Beede (6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K) was brilliant in No. 9 Vanderbilts 14-1 shellacking of Illinois-Chicago. The Commodores pounded out 19 hits, as 10 different players recorded hits.
Chris Ellis (9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) shut down Georgia States potent offense in Mississippis 3-0 win. The talented Ellis appears to have harnessed his significant potential, as he has opened the year with 15 consecutive scoreless innings, allowing just nine hits.
Stephen F. Austin State pushed across a run in the 13th on a sacrifice fly to upset No. 21 Alabama, 2-1. SFAs Cameron Gann (7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) outpitched Bama ace Spencer Turnbull (5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 6 K).
Jordan Montgomery (7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K) dominated for the second straight week, leading South Carolina to a 4-0 win against Eastern Kentucky.
Aaron Nola exited after seven no-hit innings for No. 8 LSU, allowing just one walk while striking out eight in a 9-0 win. Good luck finding any pitcher in college baseball off to a better start than Nola, who is now 2-0, 0.00 with 14 strikeouts, one walk and four hits allowed through 13 innings.
