The issue is they wont ever drop the rivalries. Those at the top dont want change, it's working for them. Heck it worked for us this year. Those at the bottom dont want to drop a guarenteed fellow bottom feeder from the schedule every year.First, I completely agree the solution to the rivalry conundrum was exactly what you suggest: do not count those games as conference games in particular years.
I disagree on the latter, but admit it may not be that way for all teams, because I do not know how many teams have a rivalry like, say, the Georgia-Florida game. UT doesn’t seem to have one. But the solution of not counting those as conference games at times takes care of it.
You also forget that it's about the money. TV deals love the big rivalries. You think ESPN pays out as much knowing the conference is dead set on MINIMIZING their big games?
The only reason people want out is because we have been in a pit, and they want an easy temporary fix. Doesnt matter if you drop 1 or 2 or even all three UGA/UA/UF from UTs schedule. Dooley, Pruitt, and Butch were still terrible coaches. Having a rougher schedule made sure we realized that faster and move on sooner. As anyone really arguing that keeping Butch around for 3 more years will he feasted on the small guys would be a good move?
And isnt the argument that an easier schedule helps us with the playoffs? I dont see that being the case. Can anyone imagine a Butch Jones lead UT making the 12 team playoff and looking any better than Notre Dames two attempts? We still would be facing the best teams in the nation. We just wouldnt find out until the post season.
