SEC football position rankings 2014: Running backs - ESPN

13. Tennessee: Senior Marlin Lane has a ton of experience and will relied on even more with Rajion Neal gone, but inconsistency has always been something that has hurt Lane. He’s yet to hit 700 yards in a season, but he’s shown flashes his entire career. Freshman Jalen Hurd, who has great size and athleticism, is being viewed as the real deal in Knoxville and will have very opportunity to grab a good amount of carries this fall after enrolling early. Him taking the starting job wouldn't surprise anyone.

Really Dissapointed in this ranking. I really feel we should be in the 8-10 range. Thoughts?

Varying factors depend on how well our RBS do

1) New OLs ability to run block
2) Play Calling
3) Ability of QB to throw the ball

More to it than whether they are talented at the position

That list is a pretty ridiculous. How in the world is Kentucky not last? They didn't have a single rusher reach 500 yards last year, and that is the kind of crap they have returning.

This team is flying well below the radar. That is a good thing IMO. They still have to prove themselves but there is no pressure and I am confident that CBJ will have his team prepared to surprise many this fall.

Marlin Lane was never the starter and also had some injuries, so of course he never racked up yards. Look for that to change this season, though. Lane is a great north/south runner and is just shifty enough to break a few key tackles here and there and nearly always manages to fall forward for another few yds. We should have quality depth at the RB position such that whoever is getting the ball has pretty fresh legs.

That is pretty low, although it wasn't the prettiest Lane and Neal, two avg to mediocre RB's, combined for over 12oo yds last year. You think with the addition of some good recruits and that kid out of Hendersonville we would be equal to better.
Then again we had to replace our entire oline and are depending on freshman, and of course the obligatory 'ESPN hates us'

Running is what we are going to be all about this year. If Blair gets in shape, he'll lead the way in terms of a very good run blocking O-line. Hurd and Lane are both power runners. I understand Hurd is fast, but if he becomes a great N and S runner we will be deadly running the ball. We will have two power backs and a change of pace back in Scott. DY should also be in the mix as well, especially on passing downs. Our offense should greatly improve on short yardage and goal line situations with Lane and Hurd getting the carries. I love watching fast football and the excitement it brings, but nothing beats smash mouth football.

agree 100%. Besides, Lane hasn't had the lion's share of carries his entire career with us, so there's really no reason to show that he can do much more than he has already shown when you factor in everything else.

It's only a pre-season ranking. Rankings very well could change at the end of the season, but my gosh Bummer & GA are loaded. Just shows you how our talent level needs to be built much higher before we can once again contend with the heavy weights in the SEC. CBJ needs at least 2-3 years of top 5 recruiting to get us there.

Over 1,600 yards combined. Neal had over 1,100 himself. Both averaged at least 5.2 ypc. If that's mediocre, I'll take it every year.

i never thought Lane was inconsistent like they mentioned. he just simply didnt get as many carries. he averaged 5.3 YPC. He does it every year without getting many carries. Neal was inconsistent up until his senior year. not sure where they got that about lane. Lane also catches the ball great but this staff didnt utilize that at all last yr.

they combined for almost 1700 yards, 16TDs, and avg about 5.3 YPC combined. not too bad.

I don't fully agree with the list, but they have a point putting us so low. Lane is now going into the year being THE GUY. He has never been in this position, but saying that I think Lane and Hurd share the carries. Hurd is freshman and no one really knows how well he will play his first year.

All I do know is the WR position better be in Top 3 ....

5 new and inexperienced OL. Lane did not start last year because Neal was better. Do the math.

I've always felt lane was better than Neal. Never seems to go down at first contact and always falls forward

I have felt that he was our best RB since he got here. Always seemed to be held back by injuries. He always gained yards after contact. Unlike Neal and Poole.
