I am no basketball expert but I thought it would be interesting to put together my own SEC power rankings. Feel free to rip me a new one if you disagree:)

1. Arkansas(11-1)- The big win the other night over Oklahoma is the reason they are here, and also by default. They have only lost one game but it was an ugly one to Missouri State. THey have a big game coming up with Texas that will prove how good they really are. THey have also played all but two games at home so it is really hard to judge how good they really are, Bud Walton Arena is a tough place to play.

2. Tennessee Vols (9-3)- Yea it a rough week for us Vol fans but this is still a talented team and also a very young team. Everybody knows the reasons they should be here and the reasons they should not so I wont get into that.

3. LSU- (12-1) Well they have a good record but that is about it. I have not seen them play any but from looking at their schedule they have not play anybody, their biggest win was over Washington State.

4a- Kentucky (11-4)- I dont know about them, I am sure they will be tough come SEC play.

4b- Florida (12-2) Biggest win was over NC State yesterday when they trailed for most of the game at home. I do not think this team is to good, once again Billg G has put together a schedule that a couple of us here at Volnation could have went 12-2 through or atleast 10-4.

Not alot seprating these last teams, they all have ugly loses to some bad teams and no good wins, all products of having a weak schedule.
6.- Alabama (10-3)
7.South Carolina (10-2)
8. Vanderbilt (11-3)
9. Mississippi State (9-5)
10. Ole Miss-(9-5) they have lost everybody to injury its been a rough year for the Rebs and I do not blame Kennedy for going to a bar at 2 in the morning to try to drink it away.
11 Georgia-(9-5) Bye Bye Dennis Felton, although who could they get, who wants to coach at Georgia??? I guess we will soon find out.
12- Auburn- 10-4

Overall not a good year for the SEC, right now I can not see the SEC getting over 3 teams in the big dance. The biggest wins so far for the conference is Arkansas over Oklahoma and Tennessee over Georgetown.

Enjoy and GO VOLS!!!!!

Thanks for the rankings. Interesting to mull over. I think the SEC finds a way to sneak at least 4 teams into the dance.

Even with an 11-1 record and a win over an extremely overrated OU team - Arkansas shouldn't be #1 by default.

Edit: Wow... they took down a good Texas team which is much more impressive... so I guess I have no problem with them being ranked #1 now - I don't think they'll win the SEC though. If they had played that game away they would have been blown out of the gym.

5.South Carolina(may be as high as 4)
6.Georgia

Here is how I would rank our putrid, festering conference:
1. Tennessee
2. Kentucky
3. Florida
4. So Carolina
5. Vandy
6. LSU
7. Auburn
8. Arkansas
9. Ole Miss
10. MSU
11. Bama
12. Georgia

Many will think my ranking sucks. But most should agree that ranking Arkansas #1 is laughable.

Still laughable? They beat a pretty good Texas team, right now I do not think there is a question, hopefully our Vols can get things going to be the best team.

Don't try to act like you saw that one coming tonight. Arkansas is proving to be a threat - but they will not win the SEC.

The thing about arkansas is that they've played every game at home all year except for one...which they lost...to missouri polytechnical and recreation state. That's troublesome.

More troublesome is that their best defensive stat is opp. low FT%; we're not talking about how many times they foul, but rather how bad their opponent has been at making free shots. That's gonna even out as the year progresses, and that'll mean that OT wins vs SE Louisiana, and 2 pt wins over So. bama are gonna result in losses to the likes of carolina and the mississippis.

Maybe even more worrisome is that their opponents shoot 38% of their shots from behind the arc, which means when you play better shooters those numbers are gonna rise(although don't ask texas about that), or alternately you might start dealing with teams that have a better inside game that can expose you(note here that arky doesnt particularly block well in the box, nor do they force difficult shots inside--from what I've seen).

I don't buy the arky hype, but this guy did and it
proved a solid call, for now.

Id go:

1. UT
2. KU
3. FL
4. SC
5. VY
6. ARK
7. AU
8. MSt
9. LSU
10. Bama
11. Miss
12. Georgia

I think you still gotta give Arkansas more credit than sixth. I'd put them ahead of Vandy and I don't think Florida is better than South Carolina or Arkansas (at this point but they will be eventually) but they are better than Vandy right now. The top 4 are really close.

Fortson is better than most are giving credit. Arkansas is now a bonafide contender for the SECW. Remember, Fortson was a UT PG serious recruit for a while and dropped off for whatever reason. UArk will fiinish the year in the top 3 of the SEC overall.

I think anytime anyone even mentions arky they talk up fortson---it's not like this kid isn't getting positive pub. And for what really? Sure, he's a freshmen, so you have to temper your expectations and alter you evaluations--UNLESS he's the guy who plays more minutes than anyone else on your team and your having a conversation about how well that team is gonna fare THIS year.

He's below-average offensively(which is fine because he doesnt shoot much for all the time he's out there), shoots an atrocious FT %, turns the ball over a lot for a player at his position, and while his assist numbers are phenomenal his poor shot-selection almost negates them.

As per the earlier post about arky being 3rd best: Of course that could certainly happen what with lack of real tiers in this league today, but their wins, more so than almost any other team i can think of to research, have been heavily reliant on opponent's poor FT shooting(arky is 7th NATIONALLY in this stat), and offensive glass. Plus that whole thing about 1 road game and it was a loss.

Arky doesnt really rank high anywhere other than 'making' other teams miss their free throws. To me this looks like a collapse waiting to happen, or at the very least: tempered hype.

No I didnt thats why I had them at one last week. I am by no means a Arkansas fan I cant stand them but who else has beaten 2 top 10 teams this year no matter where they are. Arkansas is the best team right now. Do I think they will be the best team in the SEC at the end of the year no but for right now they are. Hopefully UT can start playing and be the best team.

Fortson is better than most are giving credit.

I think he has the quicks but tends to play out of control too much. In the 1st half last night he was terrible. Nevertheless Arky looked good.

  2. Tennessee
  3. Kentucky
  4. Florida
  5. Vandy
  6. LSU
  7. South Carolina
  8. Alabama
  9. Ole Miss
  10. Miss. St.
  11. Auburn
  12. Georgia

Why do people rank Vandy, and even LSU (which is a more debatable), over South Carolina at this point?

Vandy had a big win the other night at UMASS. And have looked solid so far in the preseason.
But you are right they have no big wins and have had a week sched thus far. But that jerk offs teams have been solid the past couple years and they have a great homecourt advantage so I am thinking they will finish in the top 6 of the conf.
They have good freshman and 2 solid bigs.

Why do people rank Vandy, and even LSU (which is a more debatable), over South Carolina at this point?

I think it's probably because:

1) SC has been incredible from behind the arc thus far, and people tend to expect teams like that to have poor nights more often than inside teams.

2) Vandy has been a brick wall against teams that shoot inside the arc so far, and solid D play like that tends to translate positively over the course of a season.

3) Ogilvy and recent past success, which of course is a bad way to evaluate in college ball, especially when you consider that devan downey, baniulis, and archie are all juniors playing exceedingly above their expected progressions.

The key differential is probably that vandy just doesn't force turnovers, and yet they give a lot up; SC forces a lot of turnovers, and gives up very few.

I have no idea why anyone is ranking LSU ahead of SC, let alone in the top 6.

LSU hadn't really played anyone... and had 1 loss (and it wasn't really a bad loss) up until the Utah loss... which was a bad loss, especially considering the score.

But I'll take a Devan Downey team over Vandy's roster and even over LSU with Thornton.
