You are probably correct, but please do consider this: Kentucky was picked first, and finished first. The SEC is not exactly a powerhouse conference this year, perhaps diminishing the accomplishment of finishing undefeated. The talent level at UK is so far above the rest of the conference it's sad. However, I accept that Coach Cal deserves the credit for having brought such talent to UK.

UT was picked 11th and finished 2nd with exceptional coaching along the way. Not only that, but finishing amazingly strong after a dismal start to the SEC campaign is noteworthy.

My hope is for co-coaches of the year. They are both deserving and both should share the prize IMO. UK fans have a lot to be proud of this year, but I truly doubt that they are any more proud of their team than we are of ours. That's saying a lot, considering that one team is a lock for a #1 seed in the Tourney and one team may not even get in!

You make some good points and a more compelling argument than those who want to dismiss the quality coaching job that Cal has done this year solely based on the premise that he has better talent.

With that said, I have two exceptions to your argument, and they go hand in hand. First, you can't credit Martin and Tennessee for finishing second in an admittedly weak SEC, but at the same time, use the conference's weakness as a reason to diminish the accomplishment of an undefeated conference season. Second, when in the last 10 years or so, has the SEC been a dominant conference? There are just too many average teams with programs that take a distant backseat to football (Georgia, Auburn, Ole Miss, and LSU for example). It's not like this year is the exception.

I would be ecstatic with them both getting co-COY, though I think it's a bit of a cop-out. They both deserve it for different reasons. In any other season, I think it's Martin, hands down. It is just unfortunate for him that Cal has accomplished what he has in the same year, which I find more impressive personally.

This sums it up best. Calipari has gone unbeat in a power 6 conference. If UK had went 14-2 then Martin probably wins. But there is something special about perfection and it's usually rewarded.
