1. I'm not going to blame Barnes for putting Gaines in late. I mean, I think there is a different strategy to take to guard Jones (like just don't switch) but it was a great effort by Gaines. Just unfortunate that they called a foul and Gaines bricked the free throws. I just think if you know the play (which great scouting they knew exactly what it was going to be) then just don't switch and go over the screens and hedge. But it worked on defense and we got to the free throw line. Gaines needs to hit one of those.

2) What I will criticize is the absolutely terrible, no good horrible offensive coaching execution at the end for that final play. You get a free timeout below the bucket. Instead of using the full court to try and get Keon moving you call a timeout at half court (also giving you zero timeouts in case you might need it!) then you call a half hearted slip screen and Bailey isn't spaced correctly and the lane clogs. Then Bailey panics and takes a terrible 3 with four seconds remaining. Just horrible.

3. Some of the offensive charges against Tennessee were definitely questionable but 19 turnovers cannot happen. I loved the pace in the first half and I'm fine with some turnovers. The problem is the turnovers in the second half almost all came in the half court. Tennessee doesn't shot the ball well enough to win games with 19 turnovers.

4. I hate calling out players directly, but I have no clue what Victor Bailey's role is on this team. I don't have the +/- in front of me but Tennessee was up 15 and he came in and then it was 3 within 3-4 minutes. It's not all him. But he doesn't seem to fit this team at all right now. His defense has been regressing and offensively he is ball stopping. If Fulkerson can play next week, I think Bailey needs to be out of the rotation right now.

5. The offensive space and gameplay in the first half was excellent. They got Keon moving in the half court sets to get him the ball in space and let him use his athleticism to score. They pushed the pace with purpose knowing they needed to score to have a chance in this game. Unfortunately that stopped in the second half thanks to turnovers. Keon and Jaden hit some tough shots too and that might have maybe inflated the offensive performance. In the second half that slowed down significantly and once again the offense bogged down.

6. Something that will get lost with the turnovers and late game craziness is the offensive rebounding by Alabama and that is where Tennessee really missed Fulkerson. For some reason despite their size Nkamhoua and Plavsic are not good rebounders and Alabama kept the game close in the first half thanks to their effort on the offensive glass. Sometimes even if you miss 3's it's not the worse thing because you can get some offensive rebounds and Alabama was able to do that.

7. I love Jaden. He is going to be a first round pick. I think he can even be an NBA starter and I think he's our best player offensively. But for the love of all that is holy please take the ball to the rim and stop putting yourself in worse spots with midrange jumpers. I pray somebody will coach that out of him. It just bogs the offense and creates tougher shots instead of letting him finish and also try to draw fouls. Plus it gets him in bad spots and is more likely for him to turn the ball over.

8. Bernard King Player of the Game: Keon Johnson. This was pretty easy despite the less impressive second half performance. He was everywhere on offense and defensive and made an effort to grab rebounds. This game is the perfect example of why he is going to a lottery pick.

9. It's hard to feel disappointed by a five point loss but man when you blow a 15 point lead in the second half with poor execution, some calls that didn't go your way and terrible late game strategy it's a tough pill to swallow. We saw the same problems in the second half that we have been seeing for two months now. We didn't have John Fulkerson but Alabama didn't have Primo either. This was a missed opportunity once again. I don't see a major run. They can make the Sweet Sixteen with the right matchups. And they can also lose in the first round. Maybe they can make something happen in the next couple of weeks. You never know in March.

Thats a great summation, and I agree with most of it. I do think Uros actually rebounded ok, but definitely should've been better considering Bama's lack of size. Still, I was happy with Uros' performance today in a tough matchup (team high +6)
I dont think Bama losing Primo is really equivalent at all to use losing Fulk. Dont know if you were even trying to say that, but they have lots of great guards, we are so thin in the post
I would like to think that the team has gotten in a good groove these last three games, I'm not as worried about losing in the first round as I was a couple of weeks ago. Like you said anything can happen but I'd be shocked (and upset). Im gonna go crazy and predict a S16 if Fulk can play and play somewhat normally. R32 if not

Also, yeah, VB and second half Jaden killed us today. VB was -17 on the day, by far the worst on the team. They had a great chance to step up in the second with the cushion we had and the increased attention on Keon, and neither had even a neutral impact and arguably, both hurt us

19 TOs is killer when our offense can struggle for long stretches of time.

I had a problem w a lack of production coming out of timeouts. The most obvious is on the last play. What are they doing?

KJ was great a lot of the game but he also had his share of defensive lapses. Not singling him out but pointing out that we’re still riding the ups and downs of freshmen. Also having to play Plav so much was a clear liability.

All the bad out of the way, there were clear bright spots that I think we can continue to build on with another 5+ days to practice.

We didn’t have much to lose in this game. Doesn’t really hurt us in tournament seeding it just sucks to flame out again in another SEC Tournament. But the one that matters is still to come. Go vols!

The freshmen were awesome, but had a letdown in the second half. It seemed that Keon was playing on both weak knees and weak ankles. So, that may have been a factor. Glad he gets to rest them for a week.

The last 3 games are encouraging, but it is just hard to believe that we can be firing on all cylinders for 6 games. If we are playing like the last 3 games, I think we could make the Sweet 16, or elite 8. Alabama is probably the 4th or 5th best team in the country, and we took them to the brink. A couple fewer charge calls, and we probably would have won today.

Vols played as I had hoped they would in the 1st half. Slacked off in the 2nd as others have noted. Way too many turnovers, especially by freshmen and Viscovi. Viscovi gives the other team as many if not more points off his turnovers than he scores points. He gets off his feet much too often with the ball without a bailout avenue and turns the ball over but is a great free throw shooter. Pons not as active offensively today as yesterday but his point production seems to have decreased over the past 2/3 weeks. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Bailet was shooting the lights out from 3 point range for several games then playing time diminished (probably Barnes) and point production dropped. He's a shooter and shooters need to play to get into a rythem. Don't know how many years Barnes has left on contract but I for one will be glad when he is gone and hopefully English will get the job!

Oh I’m really enjoying watching Jaden and Keon continue to improve. We might lose this one but I think they’re going to win us at least one in the tourney. It’s why I’m not too down on this game, I think Keon is really starting to come into form at the right time and the team is figuring out how to play in a style more suited to his skill set. Maybe I’m being a homer but I’m optimistic about making the second weekend in the tourney

Bailey came in in a tough spot. Most of the team was spent, fatigued, and tired during the bama 14-0 run. You can’t place all the blame on him for that run.

I guess I saw the game differently. I thought the difference was Bama's defense in the second half which forced a lot of the TOs by our freshmen. did a much better job staying in front of Keon 2nd half. Thought we played all 40 minutes and came up short to a better team.

I thought we played pretty well overall the last two games and can hopefully take some momentum to the tournament.
The biggest factor in the game today IMO was having JJJ in foul trouble. He started off really strong then got two early ones and never got back on rythm. Him and pons were our best options defending Jones, and we wouldn’t have had to play plavsic/Bailey as much.

Not you only as it’s the majority opinion that we can’t win 6 in a row which I agree is unlikely since the opponents in theory should get better with each game. But it’s 2 games in 3 days then the rest of the week to rest. Not sure one weekend should have any influence on the next. We’re playing better the last couple weeks and if Fulky can play at 100% I like our odds against most teams. We just need to tighten up our D and cut down on the turnovers. If we hit the open shots were a tough out for anybody.

The implication that Fulk and Primo being out was an even trade-off is laughable. The only thing Bama loses without Primo is a small portion of depth. Fulk being out fundamentally changes how UT has to play.

They’re both 20+ mpg contributors that were missing. Fulkerson is a bigger miss sure but it’s not like Primo is a 10mpg 8th guy.

I think we almost always play better after time off. So, at least that bodes well for half the games. Gives Fulky more recovery time too.

The timing of his 4th foul was big, no doubt.

The refs blew the call with Gaines. He should have been credited with drawing a charge. If they had called it, we would have the ball. No foul shots.

Should have been a travel. Like the prior 10 times Herb Jones went to the basket.

Vescovi had 2 turnovers today against a highly althletic, pressure defense. He averages less than 2 a game on the year. Seems like people harp on his turnovers like he’s a turnover machine. Not sure where that comes from. For a guy that has the ball in his hands a lot, isn’t overly fast/quick and usually has a guy draped all over him, that’s pretty dang good. And he doesn’t get “hung up in the air” like he used to. Certainly less than Springer and Keon. He makes mistakes, but for some reason many fans seem to point his out and blow them out of proportion.
