SEC Tournament Day 2 Postgame Report

1. I'm not going to blame Barnes for putting Gaines in late. I mean, I think there is a different strategy to take to guard Jones (like just don't switch) but it was a great effort by Gaines. Just unfortunate that they called a foul and Gaines bricked the free throws. I just think if you know the play (which great scouting they knew exactly what it was going to be) then just don't switch and go over the screens and hedge. But it worked on defense and we got to the free throw line. Gaines needs to hit one of those.

2) What I will criticize is the absolutely terrible, no good horrible offensive coaching execution at the end for that final play. You get a free timeout below the bucket. Instead of using the full court to try and get Keon moving you call a timeout at half court (also giving you zero timeouts in case you might need it!) then you call a half hearted slip screen and Bailey isn't spaced correctly and the lane clogs. Then Bailey panics and takes a terrible 3 with four seconds remaining. Just horrible.

3. Some of the offensive charges against Tennessee were definitely questionable but 19 turnovers cannot happen. I loved the pace in the first half and I'm fine with some turnovers. The problem is the turnovers in the second half almost all came in the half court. Tennessee doesn't shot the ball well enough to win games with 19 turnovers.

4. I hate calling out players directly, but I have no clue what Victor Bailey's role is on this team. I don't have the +/- in front of me but Tennessee was up 15 and he came in and then it was 3 within 3-4 minutes. It's not all him. But he doesn't seem to fit this team at all right now. His defense has been regressing and offensively he is ball stopping. If Fulkerson can play next week, I think Bailey needs to be out of the rotation right now.

5. The offensive space and gameplay in the first half was excellent. They got Keon moving in the half court sets to get him the ball in space and let him use his athleticism to score. They pushed the pace with purpose knowing they needed to score to have a chance in this game. Unfortunately that stopped in the second half thanks to turnovers. Keon and Jaden hit some tough shots too and that might have maybe inflated the offensive performance. In the second half that slowed down significantly and once again the offense bogged down.

6. Something that will get lost with the turnovers and late game craziness is the offensive rebounding by Alabama and that is where Tennessee really missed Fulkerson. For some reason despite their size Nkamhoua and Plavsic are not good rebounders and Alabama kept the game close in the first half thanks to their effort on the offensive glass. Sometimes even if you miss 3's it's not the worse thing because you can get some offensive rebounds and Alabama was able to do that.

7. I love Jaden. He is going to be a first round pick. I think he can even be an NBA starter and I think he's our best player offensively. But for the love of all that is holy please take the ball to the rim and stop putting yourself in worse spots with midrange jumpers. I pray somebody will coach that out of him. It just bogs the offense and creates tougher shots instead of letting him finish and also try to draw fouls. Plus it gets him in bad spots and is more likely for him to turn the ball over.

8. Bernard King Player of the Game: Keon Johnson. This was pretty easy despite the less impressive second half performance. He was everywhere on offense and defensive and made an effort to grab rebounds. This game is the perfect example of why he is going to a lottery pick.

9. It's hard to feel disappointed by a five point loss but man when you blow a 15 point lead in the second half with poor execution, some calls that didn't go your way and terrible late game strategy it's a tough pill to swallow. We saw the same problems in the second half that we have been seeing for two months now. We didn't have John Fulkerson but Alabama didn't have Primo either. This was a missed opportunity once again. I don't see a major run. They can make the Sweet Sixteen with the right matchups. And they can also lose in the first round. Maybe they can make something happen in the next couple of weeks. You never know in March.
Yeah, I called my daughter; "don't you love being a Tennessee fan." I only saw bits and pieces of the first 15 min.'s as I was listening to the Lady Mustangs win the TN state champ. for the first time in 63 yrs. For awhile there we got a call or two that was questionable, but my god; during Bama's run they were getting all the calls. I guess sometimes it just sux being a Vols fan. Hyamms mentioned that Barnes should have called timeout sooner. It's unbelievable that we are one of the better bball schools in the SEC, but haven't won an SEC tournament since 79. It's just frustrating. Also, Keon is a very good player, but I don't think I've ever seen a vol player turn the ball over so much.

I guess I saw the game differently. I thought the difference was Bama's defense in the second half which forced a lot of the TOs by our freshmen. did a much better job staying in front of Keon 2nd half. Thought we played all 40 minutes and came up short to a better team.
Anybody can defend when you simply jump in front of the offensive player, and the ref than calls a charge on said offensive player.

I think we take momentum to the NCAA’s . With xtra day of rest and not playing SEC teams & with Fulk back like our chances to 16.
With different Ref crews we could have won this game. So many 50/50 charge calls & a lot of no call walks. The little nuances on the way different Refs call could have easily changed this game. But onward & upward GBO

I don’t think it’s likely that Fulk is back for the first weekend. That eye looks really bad. It was visibly bothering him on the bench

@zjcvols , remember that Illinois team that lost in the Final 4 to your Wolverines, the year they won it all, with Glenn Rice ? I loved that Illini team, Kendall Gill, Steven Bardo, Kenny Battle, Nick Anderson, Lowell Hamilton and Marcus Liberty

First of all, nice write up.

Part of the reason that Keon slowed down (#5) is that Bama made an adjustment at half and hedged big time with their center. Normally, we could pick and roll (which he did) but the man rolling (Plavsic) is really not an offensive threat away from the goal and was basically ignored. To me, this is where we missed Fulky the most as they would have had to respect him offensively.

I personally like KJ on the wing instead of the point . He is deadly driving from the wing as there are typically fewer opportunities to be doubled up.

Teams have also been scheming to take away the drive to the paint and pulling up for the 12 footer by JS and KJ - hence the high amount of TOs when they try.

We also missed on 3 fast break opportunities where we should have easily converted at least 2 of these.

Glen Rice does not get remembered enough as an all time collegiate.
He put 'em on his back and carried 'em to a National Championship, imo. Almost comparable to Danny Manning carrying Kansas to one. I think Rice still has the most points in one Tournament

Dang, now you got me thinking. I can’t remember a single player transcendent performance where he carried a team like that to the title since... Carmelo Anthony?

Surely I’m forgetting a couple since then.

No, Carmelo was the other kid I thought of, besides Manning, but didn't that Syracuse team have Hakim Warrick, too ?

Bama vs. LSU in the final...I'll find something to do rather than watch.:mad:
Damn good game. I can't stand Wade, which makes me feel the same about LSU. But, come on, talking about a team that underachieved, LSU is loaded. I think they have a lot more talent than UT, well maybe not a lot, but more. Even their freshmen, Thomas, had a better statistical season than UT's freshmen, plus they have a lot better athletes and basketball players that play in the post than we have, no doubt. I think LSU has the most talented starting line-up in the SEC. I have them beating Michigan but losing again to Bama in the Elite 8. I hope they lose the first game, tho. Normally, this LSU team would be likeable to me, because I love Thomas, Smart, Days and Watford's game, but Wade is just such a scuzzy, scummy SOB, I just hate 'em

The refs blew the call with Gaines. He should have been credited with drawing a charge. If they had called it, we would have the ball. No foul shots.
Am I misremembering that play? Gaines got possession of the ball on the rebound and was bumped by Jones and knocked to the ground, correct? Gaines is now the offensive player, and Jones the defensive player. How do you call a charge on a defensive player?

He's probably referring to Gaines' defense right prior to getting the ball, thinking they should have called a charge before the shot was put up. I disagree I didnt see a charge there, but that's what he's trying to say I think

I was watching some of the plays in the last 4 minutes. The foul call on Vescovi bodying up Jones after the TO was horrendous. Jones uses his arm at first and then he initiates the contact. I always look for verticality, and Vescovi was straight up. Tony Greene with a horrible call. I believe Greene also missed the out of bounds call before the TO. He assumed it was blocked, but the defense was so good that Jones threw up a crazy shot that went out.

I hope so, because the other doesn’t equate. Good point, though.

Gaines never went down, so it was never going to be called a charge. But I watched it again, and it was textbook defense. Great hustle, but just bad luck that he got the rebound on the second attempt. Pons was in position behind him, too, and in hindsight, we needed Pons to get it.

You aren't misremembering, but before all that happened, Jones nearly knocked Gaines off his feet by backing over him. Gaines had position but no call was made. Then Gaines somehow got control of the ball after an attempted shot. That is the point when they finally called a foul against Jones. If a charge had been called earlier on Jones, it would have been a player control foul and we would get the ball.

If the ref actually would have called a travel before the rebound, then the pressure wouldn’t have been on Gaines to make two free throws in crunch time.

Jones took 3 steps on his way to the basket to draw a foul.
