Guys this is a position of strength for us, but it is not RB.

It is clear to recruits that with Berry leaving we have a great open safety slot. It is also clear if they watch Brent Vinson tape from the Ohio game that we have at least 1 slot available to a stud corner.

Darren Myles Jr., Prentiss Waggoner, Gordon etc give us some good depth at DB, but it looks like the only job guaranteed going into next year is Janzen Jackson.

So who will we get in this class?

Trust David Reaves should be our mantra. The guy has our whole board in his head and he is making the calls to almost all the guys because almost all of the best ones we have any chance with are in his region.

Alabama has locked up Milliner. We would be on a helicopter rappelling into his house if we thought it could change his mind.

Lamarcus Joyner...top of the board if we had a shot, but it looks like FSU who has always been the leader can only lose out to Ohio State. Much better for him to do that than go to Florida or Alabama...

Matt Elam. See below, I think his interest was fake and was Urban Meyers way of screwing us with Riley.

Can we get Keenan Allen to take a visit? If we can I think we have a good chance, but so far he is not coming as far as I know. Reaves is pushing hard for one.

Josh Shaw. May be headed to UF with Riley. We need to hope that ND, OSU or USC ends up with Josh Shaw because it looks like if he comes to the SEC it will be as a Gator. Shaw said he loved his ND visit, he also likes the Huskies. We thought we had a real good shot at one point, and now we look to not even get a visit.

Demetrius Wright. This safety will either be with us, Washington or the far most likely outcome, he will be a Trojan. At least we got his visit.

Ahmad Dixon
Absolutely silly that this staff can go from not on his top 10 to getting a visit. If he comes out this way, I think we have a very good shot.

Dietrich Riley.
This kid posted on his twitter with a Vols background and wanted to be the new Eric Berry. He was not even tops on our board. I almost buy a conspiracy theory that Urban Meyer wanted Elam to come to that game just to make Riley feel like he was not the prettiest girl at the dance and make sure he saw that we were not committed to him. So Elam and Riley shared an official and Urban offered Riley and sweet talked him. We are still in the very top group for him, but this looks like it will drag out. He loves the attention.

Cody Riggs.
It looks like Gerald's little brother is heading to Gainesville.

Terrence Mitchell.
Reaves is recruiting him. Shorter corner like Riggs, I think he is not as high on our board as he is on Rivals rankings. We have a good shot IMO if we press. Tampa kid knows Monte's skill very well. FSU and Georgia are our main competition along with NC and USF.

Reaves is also working Fulton who seems like a USCe lock. Along with Lattimore and Quarles, he makes the USCe game important.

Demar Dorsey is still committed to Florida, and when you consider how many other possibilities this staff is in it with ranked above him, you cannot be too concerned.

Nickell Robey is coming for a visit. He is still a UGA commit but went to Travis Henry H.S. and wants to make sure he has options for if/when Willie Martinez is fired. He is a short fast corner with good hips like Riggs.

Victor Hampton decommited from the Gators and we have a real good shot. He is another South Carolina product who Reaves is working.

Christian Bryant looks to be a Buckeye lock coming out of Glenville. We can probably write him off.

Dior Mathis lost interest in us because we have so much good depth. He will stay in the Big 10.

Tyler Stephenson is still committed to Baylor. I would not mind if he came on an official with Ahmad Dixon...

So best guess is 1 taller member from Wright, Dixon and Riley.
1 shorter guy from Riggs, Mitchell and Robey.

Don't forget about Mike Edwards, sir. We will be fine, just wait it out.

If Wright is taking an unofficial at his expense to the USCe game with his parents it is very significant and puts him at the top of guys who may commit before NSD on this list.

ya but when he did against Ohio he got torched at least 3 times. Vinson might not be doing much for this team next year. Hope he steps up.

Vinson doesn't even start. Rogan and Art Evans do.

My point was he started over Rogan and Art Evans at one point and was the suck.

If you disagree that next year a top athlete at CB can get some PT and a top athlete at safety can get PT I would be happy to discuss it further.

Obviously they'd love to get Riley and Elam but both look like longshots.

Out of the guys they have legit shots with I'd say their preferences in order are 1. Wright 2. Robey 3. Hampton 4. Riggs.

They like Hampton a lot more than some people think.

So how many DB's are going to Florida ?

I believe Elam and Dorsey will be there by January.

Some people disagree with me on Elam and think we have a real shot. I do not. I think it was the smartest part of the saga so far in terms of battles won by Meyer that Riley a guy who looked like a lock to us suddenly went to UT and was there with a higher rated safety who was also being told he could be the next Eric Berry. Then Riley is offered by Meyer who says "I have 2 of the last 3 NCs and I want you" and Riley is not sure at all anymore about coming to UT.

We may end up just fine with Wright and Dixon or something like that, and in fact with this staff I think we definitely will, but it has not been an easy road to secondary recruiting.

I also think the fizzle of E Berrys Heisman campaign is hurting. Monte used and is using Berry as he needs to but this safety/lb is not appealing to everyone.

When J Jackson killed the tiny Florida WR in the end zone, high point for our secondary recruiting.

E Berry having no space to get long INT returns from, not helping our secondary recruiting.

Of course Berry having a pick six against Alabama is very possible, and would help us alot if Sportscenter kept showing that on Saturday night.

Don't you think they have a legit shot at Mitchell and Cooper?

Where did I say otherwise?

I feel the same way about all the DBs to FL? They are already top heavy. Isn't that one reason Elam started looking around? I think FL may get one more? And if they want Riggs, that would be fine with me. I know the smaller DBs have better hips, but I would rather have the Brent Vinson type size?

That would be HUGE to pull a commitment from Wright. I also don't think it's too far fetched to think it will happen as well.

Sorry I guess I misunderstood your post about Vinson not starting.

Who do you think we end up with in this class for the secondary?

Well, according to my source, Meline and Cobbs will end up in the secondary. Also, look for one of Riley, Wright, or someone else to be wearing Orange next fall.

Strange. We are hearing the same thing about Meline, but I have read and been told that Cobbs was guaranteed he would start off on offense playing WR.

He wants to play offense badly.

I think what may end up happening is that we have a few guys who get a shot at WR, and then once they are shown that they are too far behind to crack the starting line up for a while (behind Teague, Nuke, Milton who is an EE, etc.) they will move over.

Unless lots of what I have read and heard is dead wrong, Cobbs will get a shot at WR before he has to do something else.

This also explains why you are thinking just 1 secondary commit and I am thinking 2.

2 secondary commits, and 1 WR still to come in the class.

Meline, was told by the VOLS head coach recently that he will come in as a WR.

Totally agree on the size issue. My opinion of a NC team is as follows. Cb at least 6 feet and able to set the edge of your defense. Safety over 6'2 and able stuff SEC runners solo but still cover the middle on pass plays. A Deon Grant paired with a Greg Blue would be nice. BTW, I loved the hit Berry put on Tebow on an early 3rd down in 07. Stopped him cold. That was the type of play you need out of a corner. LB at least 6'2 but weakside could be taller, like Kearse in 98. MLB could be shorter. D-ends at least 6'3 and 280 or so. In 2000 D Lloyd could get double teamed at 255 on short yardage plays, negating our inside toughness . The LSU game that year is the proof of that. At D-tackle you need 3 or 4 300 pound pass rushers. Good luck with that. Saban fits this model the closest which is he remains near the top. Any thoughts out there guys or gals?

You keep forgetting that it is about speed and not size with the Tampa 2 defense. Look at the Bucs "D" during the Superbowl year. Look at the Colts "D" still to this day. Not about huge players. Berry is 5'11". Bob Sanders is 5'10". Neither teams played with huge corners or LB's or tackles. Speed rushers with a strong NT that can push the center back.
