I don't know if you guys remember but last year in Alabama a dad shot a son after bammer lost a game. Is anyone concerned that some idiot redneck may try something at the game in Tuscalooser?

Going into this game, I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about Fulmer's safety.

That's why we need the POPEMOBILE!

I have to admit that I'm worried about Fulmers safety too. Not only will they be mad about the court stuff, I think that they all realize the only way they are going to beat us is to try and off Fulmer.

It would only take one crazy bammer, and that's what worries me. There are thousands of them.

The bad part is that some bammer fans are even worried about it. I saw them discussing it on a bammer (or is that Blamer) site.
Some of them are scared a nut will do something.

Ok, well...he didnt shot the kid because Alabama lost but he was mad about the loss and the kid had done something to get him really angry.

The fact that some kid got shot by his dad doesn't have much to do with it. The main thing is that there are a lot of Bammers that are angry with Fulmer and with so many, there might be one or more crazy enough to try something.

When bammers themselves are worried about it and talking with one another about it on their sites... I am a little concerned.

It's really sad when a topic like this even has credibility.

This is not something we should even be having to discuss; a coach's safety at a game.

When people down South create so much hostility that there is fear for a coach's safety, then they need to severely rethink their priorities.

The sad fact is; there could be some nut take a shot at Phil.

The even sadder fact; most of them deer hunt so they probably wouldn't miss.

The dad/son incident was two years ago - after the blown lead and double overtime loss to Arkansas.

He didn't shoot him, he shot at him (from very close range) and missed! Aimed right at his head if I remember correctly.

The son made him mad when he asked if he could borrow the car. The dad had been drinking and lost it.

The quote from the son in the paper was a classic understatement - "I guess I picked a bad time to ask about the car" :laugh1:

As for the safety issue, I wouldn't worry about it. Feelings were pretty heated 2 years ago and Bama once again blew a late lead and lost in 5 overtimes. However, many Vol fans I've talked to who were in T-town for the game said they were treated very well. I was at the Arkansas game referenced above and it was the same. I didn't see any issues with the fans at the games.

The ones to watch out for are the ones watching from their trailers

ANY football game is a potential danger to players and coaches. All it takes is one nut with a chip on their shoulder to turn a game into a tragedy. Don't they have security at ALL games for that, especially since 9/11?

I think its pathetic!
To even have to mention security of some raised level.
If their threats of harming someone are as idol as the ones they make about winning. Nothing to worry about.

True... Though I can't think of a single rivalry in the country right now that has bad blood quite like this.

You're right about that, but I think they (security)have to treat every game as a bitter rivalry and be alert for anything dangerous. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

I wouldn't worry about it.

If you've read my posts you know I'm not fond of the typical Bammer fan.

However, I've been to several games there and have never seen a hint of trouble. What's more common to see is people going out of the way to make you feel welcome.

IMHO, it's one more obsession with the Bama faithful - have opposing fans leave saying they've never seen more hospitable hosts. I've heard many brag of it.

At least this obsession makes a positive contribution to college football karma :p

Seriously. And I don't doubt many Bama fans are actually mostly hospitable and courteous. It's just that screwball faction -- which is a part of every team's fan base -- that I am worried about. They seem to be in a particularly large uproar due to recent legal procedings, and many of the head cases seem to attribute Bama's recent program downfall directly to Fulmer.

It's mainly that Bama's crazy fans seem crazier than any other team's crazy fans I've ever seen.

Well put. :eek:lol:

Seriously though, the Bama fans are big talkers but I think they have enough sense to not do anything really insane. Florida fans on the other hand, I am not sure about. ;)

You don't have to tell me there's a screwball faction :laugh1:

However, this insanity has been going on for almost 3 years. Believe me, they were pissed (can I say that?) 2 years ago when the game was in T-town. They've been calling CPF a fat scumbag for more than 2 years. Actually, things are toning down because so many of the rulings have shot down The World According to Gallion. Without intending to, Gallion provided the evidence to the Bama faithful that Bama actually was guilty. How's that for irony!

If the game was here last year, I'd be a lot more worried about it.

I think all will be well, as mentioned it is toning down, as well as, since we are discussing it here, and the tide fans are discussing it there, I am sure somebody is already planning for it (security). I long for the days when we just talked about stats and play calling.

Have y'all seen the CSS re-air of the UF-UT '03 game where the female Gator fan flips off the cameraman at the end?

Makes me laugh every time.

By and large I agree with volinbham. But, I also know that there are quite a few who believe Fulmer has ruined their lives (yes, they live in trailers or monthly rent hotels). To the security officers at bammer, I'd like to suggest if the person dressed like a goth looks like he should be wearing Bruton stained overalls and a Mulga Feed 'n Seed cap, beware.

That should raise a red flag or eighty-six.

I dont THINK anything will happen, but it begs the question. Who here thinks that Fulmer WOULD coach from the Press Box if there was an idle threat made towards him prior to the game?
