I did not play football but love the Vols. To those who actually played football and those only, what do you think our problems are and are we on the right path

I don't see how Banks and Martinez is coming back. They need to go

Also biggest change for offense this year is lack of quality QB/WR play. Heupel has adapted well with making the run game work but when that gets shut down he is limited to what he can call. Thankfully Nico will be alot better than Milton and Mike Matthews will be a day 1 starter. Gonna have to hit the transfer portal hard at OL or hope for some seniors to come back.

I played a little in HS. I know tons of people who played who barely know Jack squat about the game and ones who never played a sport and know tons more than them.

There’s tons of knowledge on this board. Also a lot of hyper overreaction and emotion.

Filter it.

I come here to learn and learn a TON. Playing doesn’t automatically mean knowledge, and lack of playing doesn’t mean the opposite.

BUT…for the dudes who played AND follow the game closely…then dudes are 😎

Easy, you must have the right Jimmy and Joe's.
Then you need the right staff to design the Xs and Os.
We currently have some of both that need replaced. 😁

I don’t see the consistent effort and intensity that should be a hallmark of a championship football team. There’s flashes of it, but it’s not as ingrained into the culture as it should be yet. We don’t quite match up talent wise with Alabama or Georgia. We had more talent on the field against Missouri and got our azz handed to us. It’s not 100% jimmys and joes, it’s about who wants it the most. Last night, it was Missouri but it should have been us.

I played. IMO, we have a lot of problems. And I mean a lot. One of the biggest issues is we have ZERO leaders on either side of the ball. The QB has to be the unquestioned leader of the offense. Joe ain’t it. He doesn’t have it in him like Hooker, Dobbs, Clausen and Manning. We have no leader on defense either. No true alphas.

Offense. Ugh. Let’s start with the obvious, QB. I will preface this by saying I have been one of Milton’s biggest supporters. While his stats aren’t terrible and at times he has played good, he just isn’t that guy. Joe is just an average QB with massive potential. He is what he is. The offense is very limited due to his limitations as a QB. Now is it ALL his fault? No. The OL hasn’t been that great, WRs have been much less reliable than last year. Halze is a first year play caller. I think Halze and Heupel struggle with not having Hooker. Just my opinion.

Defense. Our secondary is terrible. Jonathan Crompton has said it multiple times that our secondary is bad. We don’t have dudes back there. And he is right. But the coaching in the secondary is even worse. I have no idea what’s happened to the DL. They have fallen off the map. Don’t know if that’s our scheme or what. LB play has been average at best. For some reason Banks cannot see that playing zone against ANYONE gets us torched. The fact that he keeps doing it is baffling.

Here is something that Inhave been thinking about. I think we don’t have enough good recruiters on this staff. We need better recruiters. There is my two cents.

We need speed all over the field…especially the secondary. This is our main problem with the secondary in that we are slower than we should be for a SEC defense. Further, our QB is slow in processing info which puts added pressure on the line and the WRs…and leads to our offense making mistakes. Lastly, our coaching philosophy on defense is questionable at best. And additionally, our overall in-game coaching is hit or miss. Especially considering our coach’s inability to adapt and adjust…they seem to lack this quality for some reason. These are our largest issues. Hopefully those at the top know this and our working on a remedy! GBO!

I do say that sky bee falling y'all.....btw how's Belichek doing these days? Lotsa folks having tuff times on the gridiron. Jumbo(blue font) Fisher isn't at $$$$75+ million...face it folks last year spoiled us for sure. Bowl game became a tease. Our expectations were off the radar and now here we are in reality. Still progress verses Pruitt nightmare and rebuilding the brand back.

No real strong player leadership. A lot of “betas” ( good kids, good players) no “alphas” or dawgs.

Strong leaders would never let Banks railroad the team lastvyr into a lifeless effort vs SC with a CFP berth on the line. It was obvious at Alabama. No strong leader would have tolerated yesterday. CBS would have had a shot of Al Wilson, Jerod Mayo, Josh Dobbs ,JJennings etc trying to get the guys woke up. Once this team gets down, they’re done. Last year wasn’t like that with HH. They’d quit at Pitt or vs Bama after the gift TD if they were this team.

I played. We have a lot of problems. Most on defense. Also, need a new defensive coordinator
Go back and look at our second half point totals against decent teams and it's glaring how poorly we play offense in the second half of games. We do have problems on defense, but they are magnified when we start our 3 n out routine in the second half of games asking the D to stay on the field waaaaaay to much.

Heupel has adapted well with making the run game work but when that gets shut down he is limited to what he can call.
We have a QB that can throw the ball 80 yards, but we call one to two deep balls per game. It sounds like the only limits are the calls. If we can't run, let it rip. One of four things can happen:

1. Incomplete pass
2. Interception, essentially a 45+ yard punt
3. Pass interference, provided it's called
4. A completed pass

Those aren't bad odds.
