Serious Question.

I never played in high school, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night, so from my perspective we need to take some good players in the portal --esp' defensive players and on both lines. We need to temper expectations for next year and see it as a growing/development year. My mantra about parting with coaches is don't do it unless you got a proven replacement to slide in that spot. I would love to hit the portal on defensive coordinators who can recruit and become a defense- oriented program.

People need to remember this staff was limited to 75 scholarships their first 2 yrs. That limited their portal activity. Then last yr the “pending bowl ban” was used against them. This is the first yr they don’t have those two things working against them although they are 2-3 scholly short.

I’m concerned that most of our DBs are seniors and they couldn’t cover a high school receiver. I definitely think Heupel is the right coach. We forget that Tennessee has not recruited at a high level consistently for a while. The lack of trust for Milton has about killed this season but I think that our offense is not suitable for a true freshman. It seems to have a lot of working parts.

Nico being able to sit back and study for a year will have him producing at high level in my opinion. Let’s face it, Milton is no true run threat like milroe or Daniels….or for that matter the Missouri quarterback. Overall we’ve gotta have more consistent production in all phases.

Next year - I think quarterback play will be greatly improved. If we don’t have an offensive line it will be more of the same. Defense HAS to get their $h!t together next year!!!

It just seems that Tennessee has some major production and then our next opponents figure us out and prepare and we don’t pick up on it.

The team is extremely undisciplined. The offense commits multiple drive killing penalties every game and the defense has committed dumb penalties to extend drives. You can’t score points consistently when you’re playing behind the sticks. The Missouri game they didn’t match Mizzou’s energy and got ran off the field. Missouri has a good team this year and it seemed like the entire team, coaches and players, thought it’d be like the last 2 years

If the game plan is blown up then we are cooked. Really surprised at our lack of any adjustments....Look no further than coming out at half yesterday and we looked exactly the same as the first 2 quarters....Notice what Mizzou was doing to our defense time and time again the first half? Notice how they did the same the entire 2nd half? This is the norm,

We have 2 (two) comeback wins. We got down 3 early to Austin Peay and won....We got down 7 early to A&M and came back and won. Thank gosh they had one of the worst offenses in P5 football.

We are average or below at darn near every position. We use to say our DL was a big bright spot but they have looked bad lately...Coaches have to earn their money scheming and game planning against the better teams when you have lesser talent. So far we fail in that area. I saw a team yesterday that had rather been in St Louis riding up to the lookout on top of the arch. We were out coached and out schemed and played from the opening whistle....Very concerning IMO.

Go back and look at our second half point totals against decent teams and it's glaring how poorly we play offense in the second half of games. We do have problems on defense, but they are magnified when we start our 3 n out routine in the second half of games asking the D to stay on the field waaaaaay to much.
Agree. But we rotate a lot of d lineman and linebacker. They shouldn't be tired

Just in 2021 TN football after transfers and such had the worst roster in college football period. I believe they were down to around 35 scholarship players. Now, 2.5 years later, some of you are calling for firings. So arrogant and embarrassing. We’ve had incredible success under CJH. Let the man have a little time to make the necessary adjustments.

It is rather interesting to see all the opinions and how different they are. We as fans sure lose perspective quick don’t we? I think there’s a tad of truth in some opinions but the most extreme positions kinda seem desperate. You make the best assessment I’ve seen so far though 👌.

Here’s my take: we are very thin and a couple of key injuries have cost us severely. You guys talk about leaders - without Mays we lost to UF - with him we win that game.
With Haddon and Bru (and McDonald) we look very, very different- not saying we hold on against Bama, but sure would have liked to know. Not saying we wouldn’t have been up more than 20- 7 with Bru on the field in the first half of that game either.
Not saying we would’ve won yesterday. But I think it would have been VASTLY different. On a team as thin as ours, taking away our best defender and our best playmaker - our one receiver who you can legitimately count on to make clutch third down catches repeatedly- makes all the difference in the world. I truly think our coaches have done an amazing job with the talent available. And the recruiting is getting better than in over 20 years. Let that sink in.
As for this week- I think we throw the house at UGA - every trick play in the book - hit a few and they gonna play tight - and that crowd will be epic loud. We got a shot.

We have a QB that can throw the ball 80 yards, but we call one to two deep balls per game. It sounds like the only limits are the calls. If we can't run, let it rip. One of four things can happen:

1. Incomplete pass
2. Interception, essentially a 45+ yard punt
3. Pass interference, provided it's called
4. A completed pass

Those aren't bad odds.
You forgot number 5 i.e. over throwing wide open receiver by 15 yards.

Unless Georgia has several turnover, we have no shot

It's the talent gap between UT and the teams they face. Some players just aren't capable of certain things and coaches have to work around it. The young guys are just not physically ready to play, yet.

VolNation's answer is always "fire the coach." Which, IMO, is the incorrect response in this instance. If you are not Alabama, Georgia, or Ohio State you need stability at the coaching positions to obtain success.

We had a spectacular year last season. This year it shows we miss: Hooker, Wright, Hyatt, and B-Young. We have been hurt bad with injuries this year, but nobody wants to acknowledge this as a problem. Our o-line has not been complete and healthy all season. Missing Bru, Pili, Arion Carter, Hadden have taken a toll also. We just don't have the depth to sustain drafts & injuries right now. We will. If this class holds together it is solid. I believe we will need to utilize the portal effectively as well. I would like to see two quality offensive lineman and a stud linebacker. Losing Beasley this year will hurt.

The losses like USCe and Mizz are embarrassing and difficult to swallow. I do believe in Heup and feel better days lie ahead. I'm not sold 100% on Banks either way. I would be ok if he is fired and ok if he stays. Martinez is terrible. I also believe Halzle is in over his head.

On defense we either can't or won't play tight match up man coverage, constantly in a soft zone. Fix that and our defense will be just fine.

Offense, IDK if it the scheme has had to be simplified because of Joe or if it was the loss of Golesh that has made the offense so predictable. But in either case you can almost predict the play call by the situation.

Defensively…I just don’t think we have the level CB’s to play tight lockdown man coverage. To be highly effective at that…you need exceptional athleticism…and IMO…we just don’t have that….yet.

Thanks for starting this thread, I'm tired of everyone acting like they know what's wrong with our team and have never played. I've played for years both Madden and NCAA. Our problem is our coaches to find and or use a cheat code, I think with the right code we can go all the way.

They should call four verts more often. Always open on NCAA 14

I can't say I played football, but I know the game pretty well. I assume you're wanting answers from a technical standpoint rather than "Because this player sucks!" so here's what I see:

Offense:

-Our receivers don't get open. The way we use Squirrel is puzzling. We seem to want to get him in space rather than tell him "Be Hyatt and toast everyone to the end zone"

-Milton doesn't throw to the middle of the field. Hooker used to shred the middle of the field, Milton almost always throws towards the sideline. They are safer throws, but harder to catch because the sideline is another defender.

-In the rare instance we can get a guy wide open, we seem to love to drop the ball

Defense:

-We run a "soft zone", it's a bend-don't-break defense. We give up a lot of yards but the idea is that the zone shrinks as they move down the field. The problem with this is that our secondary is just lost out there. When the front 7 gets pressure on the QB, takes away his intended play, and he's having to scramble to find something, the secondary should be absolutely locking down whoever is in their zone. They don't. They get confused and they get roasted over and over again.

There's plenty more, but that's the jist.
