Aluminum bats will do that to you. Make a brother scared to bring that heater in too.

I always had the philosophy to throw it in and let them hit it a mile foul.

Those low and away balls that crept over the plate that came back at Mach 3 is what sucked.

But the aluminum has made tons of bad habits with a lot of hitters. That's why we're seeing an influx of organizations doing like the Braves started, get 'em right out of high school and put the wood bats in their hands sooner.

I wish we would pick a line-up and stick with it for more than one day. I've never seen the advantage to shuffling the batting order every single day. Someone help me with that, please!

Trying to find that "perfect order" does more damage then just having a basic philosophy on what you want to accomplish with each hitter and sticking with it.

That'd be ok if you had guys in the lineup that could hit the 3run bomb. I might be wrong, but our runs must be coming from the bottom of the order getting on, and the top getting them around. I can't figure how we leave that many on.

I've always told my guys... 3-run bombs are what get your name in the paper, but there comes a point in time where you have to be able to win a game with the wind blowing in at 30 MPH.

Wind blowing in at 30 and I threw 100 fastballs. Done.

I just tried like hell to get 27 ground outs and get to the bar as quick as possible. Wind or no wind.

I coached at a HS where we needed to play small-ball to win, due to the roster. Hated to not have the deep ball threat, but if we could pitch, we had a shot.

Get em on, get em over, get em in. It's great when you get it to come together.

It also frees the hitters up to look for a certain pitch in a certain location.

good discussion!
I am currently trying to make it in the real world and I am out of coaching, but I did coach for awhile.
In H.S. you kind of got to play the hand your dealt and your offensive philosophy will come from the players you have in your lineup. I personally hate small ball and when I had the personal to do so I would play for the big inning. IMO with the aluminum bat you need to score runs. In college you should be able to recruit guys to fit into what you are trying to do. In fairness I do not know coach Raleigh and I have yet to attend a game in person that he has coached so it is hard for me to make a judgement, but sometimes a record speaks for itself.
(thinking out loud here) I am real good buddies with a couple of the area mlb scouts. I will ask them what their impressions are of Raleigh and the UT program. I can't believe I haven't already. They have the pulse of college baseball better than anybody.
good talk guys! sorry, if I just rambled. I will be back in coaching again soon I have the itch.

Good lord guys, sorry I was all over the place in that last post.
Talking baseball gets my head spinning because I am missing it. Taking a job to try and actually make a decent living is killing me.

When you talk to those scouts be prepared for some mixed opinions. There is some strong disdain for him among some.

The consensus of many, though, is that he's in well over his head.

There's nothing wrong, necessarily, depending on the big inning. Just if you do you better be putting a premium on pitching and defense and your guys should be fundamentally strong enough to know when to get guys over and or in when need be.

Not seeing that in Knoxville as of right now.

So, just to be clear, when we lose it's because of Raleigh, but when we win it's despite him?

Stuff happens. Looks like we left the weekend better than we started. Let's give it more than 2 weeks.

Welcome to the collective mindset of VN Tn fans!
