Serrano's Degree

I am not going to levy a personal attack or anything, but those who are responsible know exactly who they are and I will leave it at that.

Now, that being out of the way, why on God's green earth does it matter if our new baseball coach has a legit degree or not? Personally, when it comes to coaching, I could care less if they went through the management course at a Walmart. If they can coach kids the right way and win games, what's the problem? Who cares how many decimals he can divide pi to, or if he knows the periodic table of elements by heart. Can he teach a kid how to throw a curveball? Can he motivate a team? Does he know effective strategy when he has guys on 1st and 3rd with 1 out down by 2? His track record says YES with a loud and clear voice, and anyone questioning his ability based on the absence of a legit degree need to go back to school and get a degree in common sense.

By the way, most of these people asking questions also dislike Coach Dooley, who has a law degree. How many games has that won him?

^ what he said. x10! Besides, most people who had to take a chemistry class in their freshmen year of college would never be able to recite the entire periodic table of elements by the time they're 40. The only people who can are people that have degrees in chemistry and physics and such.

It doesn't matter what anybody thinks except the players, recruits and their families. As a player or parent of a player, you think that i am concerned that the head baseball coach may not have graduated from marketing in 1970? Seriously. They don't give a flip. Can you coach and gain a kids respect. That's what you look at. To assume that a piece of paper makes a difference is asinine.

Don't forget the travel ball parents and those that desire to be drafted...161 of Serrano's players have been drafted, like a 6+/year average over something like 23 years IIRC.

Last thing, last beating of the horse and I'll go back to being a reader...Baseball is a sport. It's not a class. The governing body is the NCAA and in this conference the SEC. If Tennessee is guilty of bad hiring practices, maybe there should be a minimum requirement for schools legislated by the NCAA or the SEC. Anybody want to go down that road? Or should a school be able to hire whoever they choose and set the standards at that institution?

If this was for a teacher in a graduate degree program, I would be worried. But he is coaching baseball, not teaching curriculum at UT.

I can see the point made by folks upset about the degree Coach Serrano has but IMO it is a trivial matter...The NCAA and SEC don't mandate qualifications necessary for head coaches in the league and would think they shouldn't..Coach Serrano can flat out coach..Period..And his record off the field with the kids that have gone through his programs is successful as well..And he actually WANTS to be here for a long long time...How could anyone think the degree he has, however unimpressive to some it may be, overshadow what he brings to the field for a Vol baseball team that can and should be competing for championships every year?...Tennessee has GREAT talent within our borders and with his recruiting success in the past, I firmly believe he can bring UT back to prominence in a relatively short time...But I'm only a fan and not an expert....Still, IMO, this is a GREAT hire and I look forward to having pride in the baseball team again...JMHO
