The Military's Secret Shame - Newsweek

Greg Jeloudov was 35 and new to America when he decided to join the Army. Like most soldiers, he was driven by both patriotism for his adopted homeland and the pragmatic notion that the military could be a first step in a career that would enable him to provide for his new family. Instead, Jeloudov arrived at Fort Benning, Ga., for basic training in May 2009, in the middle of the economic crisis and rising xenophobia. The soldiers in his unit, responding to his Russian accent and New York City address, called him a “champagne socialist” and a “commie ******.” He was, he told NEWSWEEK, “in the middle of the viper’s pit.” Less than two weeks after arriving on base, he was gang-raped in the barracks by men who said they were showing him who was in charge of the United States. When he reported the attack to unit commanders, he says they told him, “It must have been your fault. You must have provoked them.”

Disgusting.

While many might assume the perpetrators of such assaults are closeted gay soldiers, military experts and outside researchers say assailants usually are heterosexual. Like in prisons and other predominantly male environments, male-on-male assault in the military, experts say, is motivated not by homosexuality, but power, intimidation, and domination.

Looks like joevol was right about the abundance of sexual assault in the military, but was wrong about the sexual orientation after all.

The cover-ups are as bad as the Catholic Church, IMO. Disgraceful.

I'm going to lean towards some fabrication going on here.

There could very well be some, it is Newsweek. However, I tend to believe that this happens. Probably not to the scale that it's portrayed in the article, though.

If you participate in a gang-rape, I'm not sure you are truly "heterosexual." I mean, I believe there is a spectrum of behavior, but c'mon.

I read this book Blowback and it enumerated way too many instances of sexual assault by our soldiers stationed in Japan. It happens fairly frequently and some of the perpetrators get off pretty easy.

This wiki article mentions some of the incidences:

"From 1952 to 2004, there were approximately 200,000 accidents and crimes involving U.S. soldiers, in which 1,076 Japanese civilians died. Over 90% of the incidents were vehicle or traffic related.[10] According to the U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement U.S. personnel have partial extraterritorial right, so in most cases suspects were not arrested by Japanese authorities.[10] In 1995, the abduction and rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan schoolgirl by two U.S. Marines and one U.S. sailor led to demands for the removal of all U.S. military bases in Japan."

I find the story hard to believe.

Honestly, I find only the "response" by the chain to be unbelievable. We had a similar occurrence in my old unit, involving a few drunk terminal lances, a boot and a broomstrick.

Pretty much all involved, except the recipient of the broomstick, got railroaded.

Even then, the story might have been grossly exaggerated.

What, a gang rape in basic training barracks where there is a drill sergeant within a stones throw all the time?

there were several instances where we were free of Drill Sergeants. They were in the downstairs offices fast asleep, but we sure didn't have any butt sects with anyone in our barracks.

Besides, every soldier knows that if you yell "surprise" it's just surprise sex, not rape. It's clearly just the Russian not understanding.

I know this, I just highly doubt that an organized gang rape occurred in the overnight hours. That, and things like "champagne socialist" that don't see to be a part of the lexicon of your average recruit, and the chain of command telling the supposed victim that
"it must have been your fault, you must have provoked them"

The story just doesn't pass the sniff test for multiple reasons.

Agreed, he needs to respect our cultural differences.
