LONDON – First the ship reported it had been attacked in waters off Sweden. Then it sailed with no apparent problems through one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. And then it disappeared. The Arctic Sea, a Maltese-flagged cargo ship, was supposed to make port in Algeria with its cargo of timber on Aug. 4. More than a week later, there's no sign of the ship or its Russian crew.

Piracy has exploded off the coast of lawless Somalia — but could this be an almost unheard of case of sea banditry in European waters?

"If this is a criminal act, it appears to be following a new business model," Marine intelligence expert Graeme Gibbon-Brooks told Sky News on Wednesday.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the country's defense minister on Wednesday to take "all necessary measures" to find the missing cargo ship and, if necessary, to free its crew, the Kremlin said. Wives and other relatives of the crew members issued an appeal to the Russian government to carry out a full-scale rescue mission, using all of Russia's special services.
I love how the Russians go about handling these matters. No BS involved. Find the ship, and do what you have to do. Ever notice that their citizens aren't the target of terrorists very often?

"There have been no attacks in European waters," said Pottengal Mukundan, director of the London-based International Maritime Bureau. "It's not the kind of area where pirates would find it easy to operate."

Nick Davis, the chief executive of the Merchant Maritime Warfare Centre, told the BBC that if anything had happened to the ship, cargo would have been found.

"I strongly suspect that this is probably a commercial dispute with its owner and a third party and they've decided to take matters into their own hands," he said Wednesday.
A commercial dispute? OK, if you say so. I'm sure the crew is voluntarily not contacting family.

Russia doesn't have a CNN to report how poorly they treated the downtrodden terrorists. Do you recall how the hostage situation turned out?? Killed the terrorists and the hostages. Imagine if Bush had done this....

OTOH, BHO could get away with this.

I was thinking the same thing. Just from a sheer number of attacks perspective, their citizens are probably bigger targets than ours.

I can think of at least 5 major attacks in the last decade... I am sure there are more.

Read an article early today and their saying now this might have been a state act. Real cloak and dagger stuff.

The Soviets don't respond with dialogue, rhetoric, and cries of "OMG, we're waterboarding the terrorists".

Remember when the hostages were being taken in Beirut? Terry Anderson, Benjamin Weir, and others.

Four Soviet diplomats were kidnapped on September 30, 1985. Arkady Katkov, a consular attaché, was killed by his captors; the other three (Oleg Spirin, Valery Mirikov, and Nikolai Svirsky) were released a month later.

You know why the Soviets were released so quick? They kidnapped the ringleader's brother. Then they sent his balls back to his brother in a jar, with the promise that other body parts would soon follow. Their hostages were released almost immediately.

The Russians are still the victims of terrorists attacks on a pretty regular basis.

The more i hear the more intriguing this story gets. The frantic search and all leads me to believe that there was some special 'lumber' on that ship.

So your point is??

You have to ask? Let me take a wild guess. You think "dialogue" with terrorists is the key?

The Russians don't F around. They will use whatever means necessary. Waterboarding a terrorist would just be getting warmed up.

There was a Chechen suicide bomber in Russia this morning. The price for this attack will be VERY HIGH! No yellow-bellied, spineless, whiny liberals to deal with.

"We're not being nice to the terrorists." :cray:

You want to win against terrorism? Terrorize the terrorists. Fight them in the only language they understand. Extreme violence and death. Stuff a sow's ear in their mouth upon death. In their warped minds, that condemns them to Hell.

Our policy should be simple. So much as attempt to kill an American, and we will send you to Hell.

Now, what was YOUR point?

Kinda reminds me of a story I heard back in the late 70's when the Iranians captured the American Embassy and took hostages. It was reported that they threatened to do the same with the Soviet Embassy and the Soviet ambassador told the Iranians he was talking to that if this happened, there would only be a greasy spot left of Tehran.

While this may or may not be true, the Americans were held hostage and the Russians were not.

Some people don't want peace on earth, the only language they understand is power.

Russian minister: missing ship found, crew alive
(AP) – 22 minutes ago

MOSCOW — Russian news agencies quote the defense minister as saying a freighter that went missing nearly three weeks ago has been found near Cape Verde, and its crew is alive.

The reports say Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday that the Arctic Sea was about 300 miles (480 kilometers) from the island nation off West Africa.

Serdyukov reportedly says the ship's 15-man Russian crew was taken aboard a Russian naval vessel.

The reports do not give details on what might have happened to the ship, which was last heard from on July 28. The ship's crew earlier had reported the freighter was raided by masked men, but that the attackers departed before the ship left the Baltic Sea en route to Algeria.

speak of the devil:

Truck bomber kills at least 20 in Russia region - Russia- msnbc.com

That was just today.

Dont be so quick to assume im wanting to send flower power to the middle east. But with that said it doesnt appear "The Russians don't F around. They will use whatever means necessary. Waterboarding a terrorist would just be getting warmed up." is working out for them.

"Terrorize the terrorists" ha i just dont know how to respond to that.

Come on, Slick. Try to keep up.

Don't know how to respond? I'm sure you would respond with rhetoric and dialogue.

Let's hear your idea. You seem to be talking a lot, but offering no solutions. Your idea on handling terrorism?

Well, it doesnt involve America becoming more like Russia. Which i think is your idea, so just assume my idea shares very little with your idea. That way we can both save alot of time.

Ashamed of your ideas?

I don't blame you. Advocating cowardice from your nation never looks good.

I know you are, but what am I?
Speaking in a purely political sense, my first guess would be spineless liberal.

Your response actually made no sense. I have given you my unabashed ideas on handling terrorism. You seem to be ashamed of yours.
