Shooting in El Paso

Between 15 and 20 people shot at El Paso Walmart, one person in custody, officials say

Patrick told Fox News that the suspect was a 21-year-old man. A short time later, El Paso Mayor Dee Margo tweeted that police had confirmed "several fatalities and multiple suspects in custody." The discrepancy could not be immediately reconciled.

Patrick told Fox News that the number of people shot referred to "casualties" and not fatalities. Ryan Mielke, a spokesman for University Medical Center of El Paso, told Fox News that 11 patients were being treated at the facility's Level 1 trauma center. A spokesperson at Del Sol Medical Center told Fox News that the hospital had received six victims in an unknown condition.

Didn't take our boy long, now did it?

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, who used to represent El Paso in the House of Representatives, tweeted that the shooting was truly heartbreaking."

O'Rourke appeared shaken as he appeared at a candidate forum in Las Vegas on Saturday shortly after news of the shooting was reported. He said he had called his wife before taking the stage and said the shooting shatters "any illusion that we have that progress is inevitable" on tackling gun violence.

"We have to find some reason for optimism and hope or else we consign ourselves to a future where nearly 40,000 people are year will lose their lives to gun violence and I cannot accept that," O'Rourke said.

The Democrat said he'd heard early reports that the shooter might have had a military-style weapon, saying we need to "keep that s--t on the battlefield and do not bring it into our communities."

All unverified at this point, but there are rumblings on Twitter that the shooter posted a manifesto a la the Christchurch shooter on 8chan shortly before the shooting. I'd take with a very heavy dose of salt at this point.

Yeah I've seen that it's been deemed fake. We will see.

Time stamps are showing it was posted before shooting started.

I think the pressure of tribalism has caused a rise in extremists on both sides. Too many people have ditched their core values in order to serve their ego of the "other side" being wrong. It's hard to unite a country with so many differences but this has been out of hand for decades. It came to the front during the Obama years (not necessarily blaming him)

Using bogus statistics to push an agenda is going to turn a lot of people away from the very start.

It might be true, but I really wish media would hold off on stuff like this until they know for sure.
Beto could have waited until tomorrow to get in to the gun control issue at least. I know he needed to comment because it was his former district, but he could have kept it about the victims and addressed gun control later.

We are about the same age, so I think we have recency bias. I know many on this board that are older than us have commented that it has always been this way. We just see more of it because of social media and 24/7 news networks.

Tribalism definitely is a problem that I don't think has a solution. The cat is out of the bag.

The number is accurate if I recall correctly, but that is all gun related deaths, including suicides and accidents, which are the vast majority. It is misleading to use it the way Beto did because it makes it seem like 40,000 people are being murdered by mass shooters per year.
