Just wondering what other Vol fans thoughts were on this subject? Personally I think a team that finishes first or second in the conference should not be punished for a loss in a conference title game. I post this likely knowing Bama will be one of the two teams in the conference title game.
We beat Bama straight up and if they are the loser in the SECCG then we deserve in plain and simple. It is so close in the conference this year that it’s tough and we deserve more spots but if you talk about eye test like they keep saying 🙄 we beat them head to head. Enough said. Doesn’t matter where it was and this and that. We beat them. We are the better team. Defense had a bad game against Georgia but let’s not act like the refs didn’t have anything to do with it. I just thought it was great coaching by Kirby or whoever to get us to jump and take advantage of a defense that is biting at the bit to get after you. Only works on the road and in a game like that but our offense and what I saw from guys a still FRESHMAN qb wasn’t terrible. I don’t think this wr room is that great and Sampson laid it all out there. We can’t expect defense to just carry our butts and never slip up. They have been phenomenal up to this point and we have a good chance at making the playoffs so I’m all good but just not hoping to be crushed by the committee as us vol fans usually are just in general. We are an annoying fan base 😂 but not one team is near as passionate and that’s why we are who we are. Can’t believe I’m saying it this week but GO Gators

I don’t think there's even a need for a SeC title game anymore. It's all gonna be settled in the playoffs.

Agree no need for game, but you can't un see it. So depending on outcome it will have some impact.

I think it should and I also think with the new playoff model, they should do away with the game as it hurts the conference. I sure do with there wasn't a championship game in 2001.

Yes because they would be playing (well should be playing) the same caliber team they just played in the SEC championship game in the playoffs. If they can't win it, that should be a reflection on their ranking. Whether the knocks them out of the playoffs completely though would depend on the other teams and how they stack against them at that time / after championship weekend.

I bet the committee will act as like the SECCG is a playoff game. Winner moves with on with a bye and the loser goes home. That’s how it worked last year.

It means the SECCG is one of the hardest playoff matchups you could draw. Nobody wants to play in it.

If Bama was in our position, their fans would make the statement that they beat Georgia straight up and should be here over them.
If Georgia was in our position, their fans would make the statement they beat UT straight up and should be there over us.
If Ole Miss was in our position, their fans would make the statement that they beat Georgia straight up so they should be there over them.
If Texas loses to A&M, they would be the only team with 2 losses that doesn't have a good win on their resume as far as I can see.

I've seen a lot of people say we should be there over Bama because we beat them. Look at the teams everyone has beat and lost to. We lost 2 games. If you don't want to be talked about getting left out, then don't lose the games. Any other year, we would be just hoping sitting at the 12 rank that we didn't get left out of the New Years day Bowls. I would argue that anyone outside the top 4 can't complain if they get left out.

If the teams number of losses is EQUAL to the next team up after the SECCG... No.
If the teams number of losses is greater than the next team up... yes.

Wins and Losses HAVE TO matter! If they don't... why are we all wasting our time?

They're trying to get 4 if not 5 SEC teams in. There's no way in heck that Sankey and the big 10 commish would let them to dump their #2 team they forced to play in that game. Idk why I keep seeing this. It isn't happening in a million years unless they lose their star QB to injury.

I don’t think so, unless it’s a one bid league and the team that lost was projected to have won and gotten in. I suspect this poll would look very differently if we were slated to play in the SEC Championship.

I put "no" but I say it depends. Let's say Texas wins out and then gets beat 49-0 or something insane, with their weak SOS and no top 25 wins (well I guess they would have A&M in that instance), I say leave them out.

Same with Penn State in the B1G.

However, teams that have a solid resume shouldn't be punished.

I also say if teams hold up well, even the teams I cited, then they should NOT be punished. Losing a close one should count for nothing.

As convoluted as the whole playoff selection process is with a "committee" of biased bureaucrats deciding the fate of 12 teams, the conference championship games only throw one more monkey wrench into an already stupid process.

To me, if you are already ranked high enough to be in the playoff, losing a CCG should not knock you out - whether it hurts UT or not. If you are on the outside of the playoff, then you would have to win to get in.

We all know the CCG's are only being kept around because of the revenue windfall the powers that be will never give up, but to penalize a team who's record was good enough to be a top 2 team in their conference for losing a championship game is only going to cause more coaches to speak out against the game as Kiffin did. I'm not sure the politicians running the conferences would take kindly to that.

In the SEC scenario, if Bama were too lose then Ole Miss/Georgia/Tennessee should all get in over Bama since they all were tied with Bama in second place in SEC. Bama got in on tie breaker and had the chance to win their way into playoffs. If they lose they should not get in over another 2 lost SEC team that they were tied with but did not get that opportunity.

yes. the loser of colorado vs byu should not be permitted to pass us to get into the playoffs even if they get 10 wins (if we win out,) the big 12 is a joke: cinci (5-5) , ucf (4-6), kansas (4-6) , houston (4-6), arizona (4-6), utah (4-6), ok st (3-7).

I didn't read through this thread, but my thought is yes for 2 reasons. 1. They have been given a chance to earn an automatic bid that other teams didn't get. 2. When the team that's selected for that game only gets in because Missou wins their last 2 games, we are "splitting hairs" to the point that they were lucky to get a birth in that game to start with.

I think it depends on both the manner in which they lose (blow out, for example) and how many/who their existing losses are to.

If Alabama loses they do not deserve to be in playoffs. But they will kiss ass and get in if they lose.

Kind of off topic but this brought something to mind. I don't recall who it was but someone started a ridiculous thread about Sankey changing the tie breaker rules to force Tennessee to play in the SECCG where we would likely lose and miss the playoffs. It made me think about how funny it would be if Sankey got tired of the selection committee's BS rankings and the logic behind them and decided to add an opt out clause to the tiebreaker scenario. For argument's sake, let's say Texas wins out, Georgia, Bama, Ole Miss, and Tennessee finish the regular season safely in the field and opt out of the game, then South Carolina takes the spot, beats Texas, and claims the automatic bid. Then, you have SCar, Bama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee in and they have to decide what to do with an 11-2 Texas team. Clearly, something like that would never come close to happening but it would be a pretty big F you to the committee.

Depends on how many losses going into it or to me if this is a second time they lost to same team I.e Ohio state potential to Oregon. Oregon beats them twice the. Ohio State is out!

I don't think it should matter at all except for getting a 1st round bye. Still don't believe a team should be punished for having to play an extra game.

The part that will create chaos is an upset in one of the conference championship games that gets both teams in and pushes another one out.
