Should college football players be paid?

My answer is an emphatic "No". I think paying for their education or preparation for the overpriced NFL is more than enough!

Student athletes spend thousands of hours each year practicing, playing, team meetings, visiting hospitals, doing interviews, etc. Between the coursework and their sport, they serve the university many times greater than you and I did while in college.

Thus they get a free ride through school....get tutors and special help galore...and get special treatment that everyone here knows football players get around the town.

I think its ridiculous that they get even MORE free money.

I came from a family that barely put food on the table yet I survived by working my ass off. A lot harder then these kids have to put through. Film? Practice? Please

UT needs to hire an ex-Marine Sergeant Major to keep after them. Check them in and out of the dorm. You mess up--out the door. I agree Coach Fulmer should not have to be their mommy, daddy and probation officer.

We don't need any candy- _ _ _ student disciplinary council!!! Come to UT to get an education, play ball and ACT like gentlemen or stay at home and be a crook. SOMEONE is waiting for your scholarship if you can not handle it.

Gee, how many Lady VOLS act like the men? If the ladies are acting this way it must be a well kept secret.

I'll tell ya what---I do not know either Coach Fulmer or Coach Summitt personally. But I think I'd not want Coach Summitt on my derriere. There's just something about my perception of her that makes me feel that way.

RESPECT!

LIO, being somewhat argumentative in nature, I would like to mention the following.

Student athletes spend thousands of hours each year practicing, playing, team meetings, visiting hospitals, doing interviews, etc. Between the coursework and their sport, they serve the university many times greater than you and I did while in college. Many of these kids came from much lesser incomes than you or I (believe it or not). I believe it would be beneficial for them to have some spending money. $600 per year = $50 per month. You know you girls would be offended if a guy asked you on a date to Krystal...right?

Please don't think that because I'm from Bama that I believe in paying anyone. I think everything should be fair and all schools pay the same.
I do think there should be some way to compensate these guys for putting it on the line as they do each week. Yes, they're getting their education, but lets look at scholarships. An academic scholarship does not require that you put your body out there, where you can be hurt or even crippled. These players give a lot to the school and fans that is not required with other scholarships. These guys take a risk each time they dress for a game.
I'm not saying that they should get enough to buy new cars and expensive items, but I do feel that they should get something to be able to date and enjoy some of the pleasures of college life.

Most academic scholarships don't lead to millionaire contracts in the NFL either.

Dating expenses are the LEAST of these kids worries. I know I am coming across as hard-hearted and tight-fisted and I do not mean to. I love the Vols as much as anybody else, but privilege should not automatically come with an athletic scholarship. These kids ought to HAVE to work to help put themselves through school. THEN they wouldn't have as much TIME to get in trouble and they would be better people for the experience.

I understand the views expressed that are contrary to my own, but I'm not changing my mind on this one.

P.S. What ever happened to a *date* to the library?? Last I heard, that was free.

Come on! your statement is TOO melodramatic for me. Life is a risk. You're waxing them heroic or something. Real heroes are in Iraq and elsewhere. Do not confuse sports with real life and death situations.

I enjoyed college life studying, dating and paying my own way. For them to be further compensated is ridiculous.

i never had much money in college

ate lots of Ramen noodles and drank whatever beer was on special that week.

room, meals, tuition, books is all a college student needs anyway, and there are lots of students at every school that dont get all those paid for. I think lots of those student atheletes would benefit from having to scrape by. Maybe one day after college is in their past they can be responsible citizens who have an appreciation of the privalege that they were given to play at a high level of competetion while not having to pay for it like so many others do.

Good point Dave. I ate a lot of peanut butter-- I just forgot until you mentioned noodles. :)

I'm a REAL VOLS fan but it just so depressing to see the school and team dragged through the dirt by the ungrateful.

I bet General Neyland is turning over.

Enough!

I sure was hungry an awful lot of the time I was at U.T. Plenty of times, an old Krystal burger was a welcome sight.

NO, NO, NO, they should not be paid. Are all these guys dead broke? What about all the students who attend the university and don't play sports? And they aren't getting everything paid for. Should we pay them, too, so they can go on a "date"? Give me a break. Too much expected these days...gimme...gimme...gimme...enough!
