should people on food stamps be shopping at farmers markets or own homes?

I've been in line behind 'foodstampers' and watched them buy cigarettes, beer, gasoline, etc with them. Makes me wonder what incentive they could ever have to get out and look for a job.

Foodstamps, when used correctly are a good thing. And like most govt. assistance programs, they tend to get used incorrectly.

I worked for the social services for about 8 months in SC, there is no incentive to get a job for these people because that means they lose their food stamps. You have to work to get money. You have to just fill out a form to get food stamps and welfare. Then when they get a job and see that they no longer can get foodstamps, they quit. Really made me angry after I left that place seeing how it works.

Now once in awhile you will get those people that lost their job or place, like after Katrina, and I have no problem helping out those since they want to get back out on their feet, the rest I have a problem with.

Well, no you haven't then. Food stamps can only be used for one thing, food.

Yeah, I guess I just thought I saw it happen. :)

How very naive of you.

They have caught shopkeepers in this town (Chattanooga) selling beer, cigarettes, and even weed for food stamp. The 'food only' rule is a joke.

Well, it looks like SOJ and Windy would agree that I may actually know what I have seen. And maybe even that I know what I'm talking about on this subject.

Pretty much, legalize it and tax the crap out of it!

Come on now OE, if that happened, after a while you would be on here bitching about how the awful government isn't giving the weed CEO's a fair shake because their product is getting the crap taxed out of it!
