This may belong in the NCAA forum, but I figure it can work in here too.

Heard the debate that's age-old I'm sure today on the Drive, talking about whether or not players should get paid or not, since the NCAA makes so much money off of them.

I just hadn't seen a thread on it, and if there is one, I apologize, and merge immediately.

But I just don't know how I feel about it.

On one hand, we give them a paid for education, with housing, food, nutritionists, weightrooms, tutors, hotel rooms and trips. And so I would think that's pretty fair.

But then you have the NCAA that's making a ton of money off of these kids. And I think about kids on academic scholarship. Nobody is really making anything off of their success. At least not to my knowledge.

But I mean, nobody would have bought an #11 jersey this past year had it not been for Justin Hunter. And no, it doesn't have his name on it always. But it's obvious that it's his.

I just want to know where you all stand on it. Should the NCAA allow players to be paid, or keep it as it is? Or should we just go the route of super conferences, and let each conference dictate what they do?

As I said, I'm sure this debate is somewhere else on this mega site...but I hadn't really seen it recently, but it's resurfacing as a issue.

Thoughts?

They make it possible; they assume all the risks; everyone else gets rich. They should be paid.

I got a scholarship package that effectively paid me to go to UT. Eric Berry couldn't get a dime extra. It's obscene.

What was your 1st salary compared to EBs?

Yes pay them. Something small because you require athletics to be their "job". Pay them $50-$100 every 2 weeks and give them what we give them now (room, board, tuition, etc.).

When asked this question I always think about Any Given Sunday when Jamie Foxx is talking about his college experience as an athlete. He says something to the effect of "you're in college, you want to take a girl on a date, buy yourself some nice clothes every once in a while, and you can't" and I agree.

Especially when you consider a good portion of these athletes don't come from families that are extremely well off. Cash to go enjoy some college life may not always be available to them.

Yes pay them. But make it something small.

Like most things, it's far more complicated than people like to believe.

How much?
Does every school pay every player in every sport the same amount?
If all anyone gets is a few hundred bucks, are they still "exploited"?
Does one school pay a player more than another school?
Do the players pay taxes on this income? Why not pay taxes on their scholarship income?

There are seemingly endless problems when opening this can of worms

which is why each athlete should get a decent stipend and then be allowed to make money off their number, image, appearances, autographs, etc.

they then receive something closer to their market value.

If I am wearing a 16 jersey for Tennessee, is a fan buying the jersey because of me or p. manning? How do I prove which is the case?

since players can make money off their name, jerseys can have names now. so put the name on the back or have the generic #1 jerseys with no names that you see sometimes. then you can prove it.

sorry cant link it but on average a duke basketball player is "worth" one million dollars. ..they are cheated and.the free education argument is bs

How so? How is the free education argument BS? Anyone who's ever paid off student loans for a decade or 2 would probably disagree with you. At UT right now, when tuition, room and board and books are figured in, it's right at $20k a year. Lets see... 20 x 4 is ... $80,000.

I gotta kid who's gonna be a freshman in the Fall. After Hope and a little $1500 UT scholly, we're left with about $14,500 this year, will be more over next 3 years. As the guy who's gotta write the damn check for it, I see the value that a free ride scholly provides. Real money chief.

Agree with the education is BS argument. I watch a story on the Fab 5 who had shoes named after them and didn't get a cent for it. How Meny back up players do you buy the Jersey of..none. if Charlie high had a Jersey out would you buy it? Would you buy a.js Jersey of course because a.j. is a beast and probably one of your favorites. So why shouldn't he get a lil money for the Jersey that he made people want to buy.

yeah, but your kid isnt bringing in millions for the school.

how would you feel if you did something for your job that allowed your company and bosses to make millions of dollars in revenue yet you saw $30,000 a year.

Can you come out of your pocket to pay for your kids to get a degree from Duke?
