Should U.S. Swap ‘Merchant of Death’ for Brittney Griner?

You don't think there's anything unusual about an American citizen showing up in Russia with $80k cash? I mean, I don't think you should have cash confiscated just because, but it is odd, no?

I'd look elsewhere for your "but what about this guy?" story (Google Marc Fogel). Not sure Whelan is a good guy, and honestly it seems quite plausible to me he was a spy in some capacity.
My point was about the cash. Obviously he wanted to do some sort of business. That's not necessarily unpatriotic.

I don't know why he showed up in Russia, presumably to attend a wedding, with $80k in cash, but I doubt it was for "patriotic" reasons. It might not have been for "unpatriotic" reasons either, but I doubt he had something patriotic up his sleeve. I don't think he's some kind of a hero.

Both sides do this. I read an article on Deadspin last night trying to cast the release of Bout as a big nothingburger because he's been out of the arms trade for a decade and said fears about him are irrational. This dude was an arms smuggler for years, someone you think the left would be terrified of.

Or encourage because the left enjoys to good arms dealer to blame on gun control.

Can't forget they for some reason also love endless wars where they can feel good about the government sending untold billions to one of the most corrupt countries in the planet.

Not three years ago, Brittney Griner refused to take the floor when the WNBA played the national anthem before tipoff. "I think we should take that much of a stand," she said at the time, arguing that "basketball doesn't mean anything in a world where we can't just live. We can't wake up and do whatever we want to do." Such is the plight, she said, of being black in America.

Yet it was in part Griner's race, as well as her sexual orientation—she is a lesbian—that made her detention by Russia in February a high-profile news story and turned her case into a cause célèbre for activists and journalists, but we repeat ourselves.

It is also why the Biden administration on Thursday struck an ill-advised deal to trade Griner's freedom for that of Viktor Bout, an arms dealer and weapons smuggler who was convicted in 2011 of conspiring to murder American citizens. Not included in the deal was Russia's release of Paul Whelan, a white, cisgender, heterosexual former Marine arrested in late 2018 on trumped-up charges. For all of Griner's complaints about being black in this country, she's gotten far better treatment than her white counterpart.

It’s weird a black lesbian/tranny who is such a victim here to alleged “white supremacy” would go to Russia to begin with knowing their social stances on everything.

I don't know much about Whelan other than how he left the Marines. I'm not saying he's patriotic but then I see no evidence that he's not.
Even if Bout's been unemployed for years, he still knows the game and will be an asset to mother Russia.

I'm sure that Bout will use his ties with Ukraine oligarchs to buy half or more of the US weapons and put them in the hands of terrorists. It's a win-win for Russia and the oligarchs.
