I don't know why he showed up in Russia, presumably to attend a wedding, with $80k in cash, but I doubt it was for "patriotic" reasons. It might not have been for "unpatriotic" reasons either, but I doubt he had something patriotic up his sleeve. I don't think he's some kind of a hero.
Both sides do this. I read an article on Deadspin last night trying to cast the release of Bout as a big nothingburger because he's been out of the arms trade for a decade and said fears about him are irrational. This dude was an arms smuggler for years, someone you think the left would be terrified of.
