Should We Be Worried...

ESPN insider has something on CUM doing some shady recruiting, anyone know anything about that?

Been debated ad nauseam over in the sports forum. Some UT fans (and FSU fans, and UGA fans, and Miami fans) were hoping it would be a scandal. For awhile people speculated that Meyer had given some undeserving girl a gymnatics scholarship to land her boyfriend, a coveted JUCO transfer.

But then the pesky facts came out and it turns out the girl had been offered a scholarship to UF a year or so before on her gymnatics ability and before the football player even entered the picture. And she had recently been offered one by UCLA, too.

So, again because of those pesky facts, folks have had to move on to try to conjure something else up. Now they are complaining that Meyer dialed a kid up and handed the phone to Tebow at the Heisman ceremony and Tebow said "Let's win a national championship together!"

Whatever.

If you think Meyer doesn't cheat in recruiting then you are wrong. Every college program "cheats" in recruiting. Urban Meyer just does it more and he will be caught sooner or later.

Yeah lawgator, that would tick me off if it was about my team as well. I think it comes with the terrority ya know? People look at UF and what they are doing down there, and get scared. I can admit it. My best friend is a FL fan all the way even though he has lived in Knoxville since he was 7, and we rub it in each others faces on a daily basis. When you're on top, people take a closer look and work extensively to try and dethrone you. It's just like ESPN trying to break a cheating scandal on TN right after we won the national championship. There will always be haters out there. But you and I both know it's only b/c they are jealous and see the future teams Florida is bringing together as a huge threat for a long time to come.

Maybe he does cheat in recruiting, but how do you know? What kind of proof do you have? Hate the game not the player. The Florida program sells itself these days as much as I hate to admit it. What highly touted athlete (especially from the talent rich areas in Florida) wouldn't want to go play with the Heisman trophy winner, on a team in the best conference, a legitimate shot to compete for a national championship year in and year out, with an exciting offense, and top tier facilities and resources? Yeah he must cheat because no one in there right mind would want that...

Did I say he did it all of the time? We also play in the best conference. We have top tier facilities and resources. And not all of his recruits are from FL.

I realize that. I didn't mean that literally all of their recruits are from FL. I think you missed my point.
Think about it as a neutral 5 star prospect and don't let our pride and emotions get into it. Why wouldn't you want to go to FL? If I didn't love the Vols, I would want to play at FL probably. Or USC. They are just in the prime of their up cycle right now and the wheels are churning on all cylinders. It's frustrating as hell, but TN has been in the mix for around 20+ years now. We aren't always going to be the best.

I think everyone cheats to some degree in recruiting. The football coach at my high school played for TN back in the day and he told me all kinds of stories. One being that they would take recruits down to a car dealership owned by a huge booster and would sell any car they wanted to them for $1. So then technically he was buying the car. I realize more safeguards are in place now, but it's still fairly easy for any crafty programs to get around the rules. When I was at basketball camp the summer before Yarbrough started at UT, there he was driving around a brand new black Escalade or Tahoe (can't remember which one).

But you can't base it off of one game. If you could, the transitive property would work in football.

So you don't believe that UF has more speed and athleticism than we do...

And before you say it...my opinion is just an opinion...

I have no substantiating evidence of my opinion...all I know is that when I watch UF play...be it against us or someone else....they look better

They look faster as a team and just overall more athletic than us...maybe not bigger...but defintely more athletic...

Now....I would put Eric Berry and maybe even Gerald Jones up against anyone on UF's team from an athleticism standpoint....

But the problem with that is those are only two players whereas UF seems to have 7-10 players of that caliber if not more....

I'm not saying UF is unbeatable or that their superior talent level automatically translates into them beating us I'm just saying they are man-for-man the more talented team...

In my expereince the bigger, faster, stronger team wins at least 7 out of 10 times...

This a recruiting class that was more about filling in holes than gaining super star players. We accomplished that with last years bunch. This may be a down recruiting year, but I doubt next year will be. It is impossible to tell what the future will bring, and don't let the stars next to their names convince you of some future failure. If our new coaches prove themselves early, none of this will matter. As far as UF is concerned I thought we played them pretty well for a good chunk of the game last year, and that was with a poorly put together and inexperienced defense. It's more about execution than anything.

I watched them play UGA and didn't think they looked better

From what I'm seeing...we are looking at a top 15-20 finish in most recruiting services if we can land some of the guys that are high on our list...

I will take this considering what most consider were our golas in this class....

But two things bug me about it:

1. Weren't linemen our goal in this class? If so I'm not impressed with the number or quality for this position.

2. Even if we finish strong were are looking at the 5-6 ranked class in ths SEC behind UF, LSU, UGA, Bama, and possibly Auburn (in no particular order)

These things are unsettling to me to say the least

It definitely matters, but doesn't mean we'll be relegated to a 2nd tier program because of it. You have to look at who we're going after this year...mostly DT's, DE's and whoever else we can pick up. It looks like some of those guys are projects, but have the size to turn into good players. Who knows? As far as I know, linemen rarely get the exposure needed to shoot up the rankings...there aren't many 5* guys. However, it would be nice to be able to get them. They'd probably contribute earlier.

It's not the end of the world, but it's no smooth ride.

This is what people don't seem to understand this year. It doesn't matter where we rank this year it was about filling needs. We had our top class last year and people seem to forget about that.

There are more 5 star offensive tackles (eight) then any other position.

Only stars I care about is how many Timmy Tebag is seeing after getting hit coming through the line when he comes to Knoxville.

I don't think anyone is saying that this year's batch of recruits are going to tell the story in 2008, but what about 2009 or, more importantly, 2010?
good thing is we have 3 years to get the right guys in there before these guys cause a problem. and its not guranteed or even likely that they will

to some degree, this is a good point. on the other hand, this view of recruiting has massively changed because many players arrive to campus more prepared to play at the collegiate level. the path to the field is no longer a 3 year apprenticeship (although CPF still leans that way some). Formerly, teams had to keep streams of players rolling in (it's still a very good practice for those that can) because of the necessary preparation. The improvement in HS coaching has led to the change and the earlier preparedness of younger players. This somewhat undermines your argument.

That said, I'd trade recruiting positions with UF right now.

I think the stars are way overrated. While you can say that it's an effective rating system for high school players it also adds fuel to the fire that some of these players think they are invisible and don't need coaching/have to work hard. I haven't looked at any of the past years recruiting classes to compare, but I know that some of our best players the last few years have been 3(at max 4) star players. For some reason one that I immediately remember is Eddie Moore. I believe he was a 2 or 3 star RB/LB from South Pittsburgh, and he turned in to a pretty good LB on the Hill. Then you get a guy like OJ Owens:)frown:) who came to UT highly rated and for one reason or another only saw the field on Special Teams.

it does matter to us because we do a horrible job of developing lower talent to compete at high levels. therefore we need the better talent coming in. So yes we should worry.

Because Chris Brown was such a highly touted TE coming in.

that Fla has 4 ***** commits; 12 **** commits and only 5 *** commits and all we have is 3 **** commits and a slew of *** commits.

Should this worry us or will CPF and staff develop our *** star guys into 4/5* guys.

We're already on a three year losing streak to them, last thing we need is for them to get a leg up on talent on us.

you don't have to worry, we are already average. fulmer can't win a sec championship with 4 and 5 star guys. 8-4 is the norm at UT with a 10 win season and a 7-5 season thrown in sometimes.

Memphis always needs to worry. Or maybe you should just focus on basketball.
