I am shallow because I do not automatically state that someone is a person of character simply because they survived cancer or a disease?

That makes a lot of sense.

Fighting to save your own life is selfish; while doing so, may not cause harm to others, and is therefore, IMO, virtue neutral, I see no fundamental difference in someone fighting to save their life and someone working to put a roof over their head and food on their table.

Cancer doesn't discriminate & strikes high or low character. I'll agree that not everyone who survives cancer is of high character. Plenty of people of low character have a strong will to live. However, the attributes of people with high character are beneficial in fighting the disease. The will to fight through seems stronger with people that have a higher purpose in life other than themselves. What if the cancer victim has young children or dependents? Or does tons of charity work. Don't know if CCM had kids or a wife at that point of his life. That is the main reason I would be fighting tooth and nail against cancer is my duties as a father and husband. Fighting to save your own life is instinctive & a biological drive but not selfish. I would think in CCM's case he had high character to start with and the fight with cancer strengthened his character and resolve to succeed even further.
