Sign Stealing Scandal

• The use of Codebreaker continued into 2018 and not just at home games, but also on the road. Until this point, it was assumed that the Astros only used their system at home. This story suggests they used at least some version of it on the road.

• Koch-Weser would often call the system the Astros’ “dark arts,” according to e-mails obtained by MLB.

“I know the secrets that made us a championship team...”

Other than fear of getting caught the org had no reason to stop it because they were increasing in value fast as the team won more during the season and won the WS. The players' brands stood to profit more from endorsements and appearances.

Bad stuff. Lots of litigation going to happen.

Today the Astros finally speak on the scandal. I'll keep their comments updated in this thread.

I still can't wrap my mind around this thing and how is the MLB is just gonna let this WS and 2 ALC's stand? IDK what the punishment should be, but if they had to sell the franchise, I wouldn't think that to be crazy. This is death penalty stuff, whatever the death penalty in baseball is.

Marwin Gonzalez is a fringe (at best) MLB player every year but 2017 and he got PAID for it. They have to go after the players or there’s no penalty.

You can’t death penalty a professional sports team.

In theory you’re correct but by granting immunity they were able to figure out what happened with that immunity. Plus the union would have pitched a fit for any monetary penalties.

Classy guys throwing their manager under the bus and they’re former teammates tho.

Why not? Forcing Sterling to sell seems like it qualifies as a "death penalty".

So you want Jim Crane to be forced to sell the team because his team cheated? He hasn’t been implicated by anybody with knowledge of the situation that he knew anything. They fired both their GM and their manager, plus were fined the max and gave up their first two picks in the next two drafts. The team got hit hard

No, that's not what I said. I clearly said IDK what the punishment should be, but that I don't think that would be too crazy.

So what's this about no death penalty in pro sports? I'm not sure what you meant by that and what you're basing it on.

Giving a “death penalty” to a team would significantly decrease the franchise value, hurting the market and your overall franchise values.

Do you have a specific idea of what a death penalty would entail? I am using the term very loosely, thinking it could be any kind of unprecedented but huge penalty. It doesn't necessarily have to be something that hurts revenue in a significant way...forfeiting every playoff game they won in that stretch, for example.
