The person, or persons, who thought a good design feature of modern cars would be the combination of daytime running lights and an IP that was always illuminated.

I see at least half a dozen cars a night on I85 in Charlotte with completely dark taillights and the driver blissfully unaware that they are a hazard, especially in bad weather.

not all of them have twilight sensors

also, the lights should come on automatically as soon as the windshield wipers are turned on, but they don't

Believe it or not the original design was to come on only when the wipers came on. This was done for safety and to meet state law
( some folks would forget and get cited)

My grandfather invented it and patented it. GM more or less stole it from him and you have what you have now.

No. His attorney said there was nothing he could do. GM actually altered the design.
Claimed it as their own. It soured him pretty good on a company he spent his life working for.

( just to clarify- this was my step grandad, I thought of him as my grandfather. )
