Simplify Your Life: Get Rid of DVDs

Yeah, my CC# could get stolen, but not sure how or why hackers would erase my information/library, especially if they have the information physically backed up, offline. If they don't, I'm in on a class-action lawsuit.

I didn't bring up the hacker thing someone else did but that's not the only scenario where you might run into where there's a sudden loss of "cloud" data. If you have it backed up at home as well though, then that's great. I didn't see where you posted that earlier but if I missed it that's my mistake. The one main concern for cloud data is that you HAVE to have a wifi connection to access it.

Sounds like it includes cloud storage and streaming.

I can rip DVDs to my computer but they will eat up the hard drive fast. Plus I can't access them from any device (not that I need too).
Hard drives are cheap. Heck a 1tb you can get for like $50 and that will hold about 400 HD movies. You can also access anything on your home computer anywhere if you want to learn how to do it.
Data usage really only counts on cell phones and if you're at home you should always be using the wifi and not data anyway.
That's not true at all. Data is data, whether it be using cell phone plan or your in home plan. It's coming from somewhere. Very few ISP's have unlimited data plans, none of which are in my area. I have Comcast, it has a 300gb data cap. I go over that almost every month because of streaming. I actually went back to having their tv plan because using streaming services alone was costing me $40+ more every month because HD video eats up all the data.

If you are constantly capping out your 300GB internet data plan I'd have to question it. It sounds like torrent hoarding or you're watching Netflix like on a constant basis. Maybe you game a LOT though.

What's to question? Like I said, 1080p streaming can get up to 5gb per HOUR. That's only 60 hours per month, or 15 hours a week. Yeah, that's 2-3 hours per day. When 3 to 4 people are using streaming services it's extremely easy to cap 300gb in a month. Torrenting would actually be less GB per hour of video if that were the case. Also, gaming doesn't eat up bandwith. You could play a game all day every day for a whole month and probably not use 50gb, but I rarely game at all.

My guess is Sony has worked out some deal with studios and thats why the limit is five.

Yeah, not every DVD works either, so obviously they don't have agreements with everyone. The only pattern I picked up on is it seems like nothing from Disney copied.

Sure there are multiple solutions to the problem but most people want it to be a low maintenance and fairly quick set-up. Setting up a personal clouds is out of 80% of people's comfort zones. Not sure how long it took huffhines to upload his whole collection to this service but it would take a days to rip upto 400 SD DVDs much less Blu-rays.

Comcast only caps in major metro areas. You can look at the list of areas they cap and it's pretty short. In TN I think they only cap Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville. In your case it's definitely something to consider when cutting the cord.

I'm down to a about 10 Blu Rays and a handful of old DVDs that I haven't touched in about 10 years. I'm moving to pretty much everything digital.

I do have a case of CDs that I'll probably keep but otherwise everything is in iTunes now. I have only about 10 physical video games across about 5 systems left, the rest are all digital, and with the streaming services, I don't buy movies anymore unless digital.

I know some purists scoff at this but honestly, it's pretty awesome to me. I have so much more room now lol.

Napster came out when I was 17. I remember EVERYONE in my computer class in HS running napster at the same time. 20 kids spending 5 hours a week downloading music, LMAO

I've ripped all mine to my htpc but have found we really don't watch things more than once or twice. Probably need to clean out some space

I'm an audiophile... I need my music. I'm boxed in to Apple/itunes right now. I want an easy/quick/convenient way to get everything I have on itunes over to my Android phone... or vice versa. I don't have 2-3 weekends to waste doing that though.

Any good suggestions for good apps that can sycnh with itunes/. I originally asked this in 2015 and used isynch ad what not. Wasn't very satisfied.

Is there anything better in 2023?

Nice bump. IDK the answer to your question but a comment on vudu.

I still use it but it's nothing like it was before. No shared library (although password sharing is a little lax), except stuff that was grandfathered in. No more DVD conversion either. Lots of $5 deals all the time tho.
