six returning Vols who are turning heads

Interesting list to say the least IMO. Inarguably the 2 worst offensive players from last year..... Peterman and Smith. An inconsistent walkon safety who was all over the map last year...Swafford. A player who was involved in the 2 plays that kept us from going to a bowl.... Pig. A player who has previously been a liability at DE now moving to DT.... Williams. And a senior RB who while flashing promise at times, has typically underachieved throughout his career.....Lane.

Anyone else see a theme? Redemption perhaps.

I always find it interesting when fans bring up the "pig kept us from going to a bowl" statements. Do you really think that team would have even been in the position to potentially make a bowl without him? If you think so, then I suggest you get your head checked.

Perhaps you should re-read the sentence. Didn't say Pig kept us from going to a bowl. Said he was involved in 2 plays that kept us from a bowl. Big difference in my mind. There are obviously others that I'm sure someone else could point to. We lost 7 games for crying out loud.

We'd arguably never been in the Georgia game if not for Pig, however, if the ball had not slipped from his fingers while reaching for the goal line we likely beat Georgia. The Vandy game/loss I put on the coaches. However, if Pig doesn't get called for the block in the back on Dobbs' game winning td run, we win 6 games and go bowling.

You like Pig, I do too. But those 2 plays define him more than anything else from the 2013 season.... may not be fair, but they just do.

Drops have become synonymous with his name due to last season. But, he was a true FR, multiple injuries, and was probably surprised when one of our QBs actually threw a catchable ball.

The coaches absolutely love this kid. He has been super solid catching balls this spring/summer. I have a feeling, based on his work ethic, that he has spent the entire off season working to change his perception.

Hopefully Josh shocks the world like Rodgers did his SR season. Very excited to see his redemption this season.

I speak with a family member of his somewhat often and he had a bum leg last year that affected him mentally and physically. As a true freshman from a small private school division and playing in the SEC against pro dbs, he still got open. He's shiftier than Z Rogers.

Great article.

Know there's an entire thread about it already, but Peterman has been written off by a majority of VN based on one bad half he played with a hand injury against the best defense in the nation (at the time) as a Redshirt Freshman. Pretty ridiculous. Worley and Crompton both looked awful in their early years, as well. But hey, we all know Riley Ferguson is the QB of the future, so it's a moot debate! ;)

Also happy to hear about the progress of Devaun Swafford and Jordan Williams. Sounds like Marlin Lane is also stepping up his Senior season.

It's not soccer, you don't catch with your feet.

And UF and Mizzou

Yeah, that Mizzou game sure was a squeaker... :loco:

On a serious note, I like Josh Smith's new "bus" name: "New" --> Everything about this season is new. His knee is now good and his hand is as well (he was called to play due to other injuries on the team and he gave it his best shot as a VFL). Despite all the talent we have at WR, he's the one the coaches are talking about as being the toughest and most consistent. Will it transfer to games? I have a sneaking suspicion it will this year...

Yep, let's not discuss anything from last year or the year before on a Tennessee football forum dedicated to information and opinion for and from it's members. Let's not discuss Worley, Lane, AJ, Pig or even the coaching staff's performance from last year, especially as we're all trying to project who might start/play this year and how many games we might win in 2014. We definitely just need to move on.

Good thing Dobbs has academics going for him, with Dormandy and Kendall coming in I doubt he will ever be a starter.

Looks that way right now, but things can change in a hurry. I hope that if and when he gets the opportunity that he's ready and plays very well. I was really thinking he'd be the man this year. Appears that Peterman's improvement may have been the whole reason a starting QB wasn't named earlier. We'll know this week.
