Strengths: Skylar is a solid three point shooter, at 39% with 168 three attempted last year, which is good. He can shoot on the catch or off screens, although he's better off the catch. He does a good job also of finding his spot on fastbreaks and hitting open three's. He is a solid rebounder, and had a couple 5+ rebound games last year. Skylar is a gritty, tough defender. He will get beat by quicker guards, but he is good off ball, and does a good job on help defense. Skylar is a very good post feeder, the best on UT, and protects the ball, with only 0.7 turnovers per game in over twenty minutes a game, a very good percentage. Skylar is deadly when he is able to set his feet from outside, and is great at free throws, shooting 85% this year. Skylar can also play point guard in emergency situations.

Weaknesses: Skylar is very limited offensively. He can only shoot three's and cannot create his own shot. He tries very hard on D, but quicker defenders can abuse him and he struggles with that badly. He also is not an effective point guard, limiting his offensive ability. Skylar has shown rebounding potential, but must be more consistent in it.

Final Thoughts: Skylar is valuable as an off the bench shooter who can spread the floor for your offense and give you toughness. But that's about it. He's best in small doses: about 15 minutes a game is when he can be most effective. Skylar plays his guts out, which is also valuable and provides toughness in the backcourt. He helps spreads the floor, and when he shoots well, UT does well. But when he can't hit from outside, he provides little value. If Skylar can be more consistent this year, he'll be an important part of UT's attack.

Love mcstache, think he's a great kid and done a lot for UT, however I think his monies diminish this year. With that said, I'm sure there's going to be a few games where we need him to come in and step up for us to stay ready skylar.

Go mcstache!!!!

I agree with the assessment of the op totally... I was at the kansas game after tyler smith was booted and 3 other scholarship players were suspended for their new years day event and with 4 walk ons contributing in their absence it was probably the most electrifying/magical UT sporting event I have ever seen in person!!! Neyland is deafening when filled to capacity while playing an arch rival in years past but when skylar mc3 put the last nail in the coffin against ku that was the loudest ive ever heard any venue since neyland in its glory
years!!! You could see the sound vibrate so intensely it looked like fog when the crowd erupted!!!! Wow what a great night to be a VOL!!!

I think Skylar is very valuable as a defender when going up against those unathletic 2 guards like Jenkins. Was it lamb from uconn he effectively shut down last year or another high profile 2? I can't remember exactly

Agree with many points except as it applies to quicker defenders on D can abuse him part when you state he is playing D. Both can't be playing D at the same time. I think I know what you meant though. At that point I disagree. Skylar is a 2. Defending a PG is difficult for any 2. Defending other 2 guards he did quite well as I recall. Apples to apples please.

He is limited on offense and could use some work on the dribble drive as well as being more consistent at rebounding.

Now for an evaluation of the 'stache. Initially, everybody was freaked out when it arrived on the court but its toughness and resiliancy pulled through. Having fought its way through some of UT's most difficult battles on the hardwood, the 'stache has now found a permanent place on the roster. Strengths include throwback swagger and shades of Turd Ferguson. Weaknesses include trying to turn it into a goatee and any kind of grooming.

I think our problem is we try to make Skylar into a type of player he is not....really its not fair for him to have to carry some of the load for more athletic spots....but he is really smart and plays with incredible intensity (wish we could get all our guys to play like that) and has done great at doing things he was never designed to do....physically or athletically...no doubt the best pure shooter on the team....beside....he's a great kid...

He is a quality situation player. Agree with the comments said. When you need a three bring in the stache.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel. Skylar will be most effective and probably best for us as a 15 minute guy off the bench. He's a change of pace, outside weapon, but he's too much of a liability IMO to play 30 minutes a game for this team.

Either way, great kid who has represented Tennessee better than you could ask, go 'stache!

I hate that phrase. Is there any type of drive in basketball other than while dribbling?

McBee needs to shoot 6-8 threes per game. If he plays quite a bit and only takes 1, 2 or 3 shots, it's not going to work best for him or the team

If he's playing 30+ minutes agreed, his purpose is 3's, he may as well shoot them. However if he's playing -20 minutes it should be 2-3 a game attempted, unless he's just on fire.

Our post game is too damn good to run too many plays solely for the purpose of mcbee to jack a 3.

If our post game is that good, the inside out game should be even better. I don't consider a kickout for an open 3 the same as jacking up a 3. Open 3 is easier for these guys to hit than a 10-12 footer.

That is very true, a large part is just his minutes. As I said, 30+ minutes 6-8 threes sounds good, -20 minutes and it should be half that.

Skylar did a decent job, but Josh was really the one who did the dirty work on Lamb.

Agree.

I'm curious to see if Cuonzo pushes the pace a little more, and I hope he does. That would really help Skylar. He's good in transition.

Makes it much easier for his defender to get lost and leave him wide open. Hopefully he'll get a lot of open looks by the inside out passes as well.

The main goal of the motion offense is to not have to call any plays. So if McBee is getting 6-8 shots a game it should be coming out of the flow of the offense. (inbounds plays excluded).
