The first time that I moved to Atlanta, the Braves were in Milwaukee. Atlanta had an independent minor league team called the Crackers. “Cracker” is a derogatory term applied to rural poor white folk by uppity citified white people. If you hear an elderly black person use the term, they’re appropriating it from uppity citified whites.
The Crackers played at a ball field off Ponce de Leon Ave, near the Sears building. There was a large magnolia at the edge of the outfield and special rules about the tree. The Crackers were very successful, and some future major league players were on the team.
The arrival of the Braves spelled the end of the Crackers. The field was redeveloped into nondescript office-warehouse and retail. The old Sears building is now Ponce City Market.
