Slow and Steady Loses the Race

Barnes is not going to allow this team to play uptempo. He just doesnt do that. How many years of the same boring **** do we need to see before our fanbase realizes it?

Fire him! Let's get a real coach! Like all those who came be4 him! (Exception - Mears).

Mears played too slow! Then he played too fast. He couldn’t recruit. Then he couldn’t win a natty with the GOAT. He only beat KY half the time. We needed better results for his $75,000 salary. He was cheating because the boosters were making lots of $100 hand shakes. He was one of those radical Lutherans. His national championship wasn’t relevant. He couldn’t even win 75% of his games (0.747 is still top 20 of all time). He isn’t even the most famous person named Ray Mears. He dodged city taxes by living in Riverbend.

Barnes has talked for a few years now about how he wants the team to push the tempo… he said it a lot last year of trying to get the team to get out and run. I am not sure why people are saying that isn’t Barnes.
Getting back to smaller faster point guards will allow us to push the tempo. I think Barnes realized this and it showed up in this past year's recruiting. Last year's team just wasn't capable. The ball was stopped at mid court every time we tried to run.

Dear Thunder Oil

As far as I’m concerned, Rick Barnes can retire here. He’s an incredible coach, he develops his players, he holds high standards. He’s a huge asset to the city of Knoxville. I have no idea wth you’re talking about his contract for. But you do you.

I was simply stating, after the Villanova game, that I don’t like our slow pace. It reminded me of last years team running at a slow pace. And I felt it negated our greatest advantage, our athleticism.

I don’t go to practice. I make no decisions. But it’s my opinion.

Loved the UNC pace.

Dear Uneducated:

You said that the push back is after every insignificant criticism. That is incorrect.

“Some of you all would rather moan about the tiniest perceived slight about Barnes rather than just, you know, discussing hoops.”

Since you “have no idea wth you’re talking about his contract for” I will suggest that you reread the comments about the chronic displeasure with Barnes. Notice how Lector’s question about just that preceded my comments. Do you object when 1985 brought it up for the 2,000th time in the Nova in-game comments?

Check my stats, I didn’t say any of the above. I don’t respond to it. People whining about Barnes I just gloss over. We won’t find a better coach anytime soon.

I’m trying to talk about pace of play with those who understand the game. I whined about it last year and I did so again after the Nova game.

Vols by 30 today, score more than 90 for the chicken!

Then you’re objecting to me addressing things that others are posting. Go quote them if you’re that bothered.

I think that Villanova’s game plan of playing high pressure, extended defense had everything to do with TN’s pace. Barnes did not decide to run with a go slow game plan. Nor do I think that he chose to demand the young team try to push the pace after they were turning the ball over about every 100 seconds. But what do I “understand”? I’ll go with the idea that CRB has forgotten more about basketball than I’ve ever learned.
