Not sure if I should be happy or feel bad for him but he is apparently transferring to Alabama to try baseball.

Doesn't really matter because y'all have Garcia. Sucks to be a Cock fan.

I'd rather have Garcia than Smelley. Smelley had 3 years to develop and I only hope Garcia can get better before the start of next season under the new QB coach.

You expected less from Coach Superior? He has a track record you know.

funny how the offensive genius can't bring in a good qb.
South Carolina is a football graveyard. That explains Spurrier's struggles there. But really, if you go back through the history of that program, Spurrier's run there over the last 4 years is the best that anybody has done in 110+years...

More proof of your ignorance. Smelley was the better QB this year. Here's the stats:

South Carolina Gamecocks Statistics - College Football - ESPN

He beats him in every category.

I'm ignorant because of my opinion? Neither were good this year, but I'd rather have Garcia for the next couple years over Smelley because of his big edge in talent and confidence. Smelley is never going to get better...that's obvious after 3 years. But I think Garcia can still get better.

I think Garcia has more upside than Smelley. Smelley had been in the program since 2006 and still hadn't seemed to catch on. He had every opportunity to position himself as the starting QB this year and couldn't do it. He had a great game against Ole Miss and then played horribly the next week against Kentucky. He had the Clemson game all to himself and completed almost as many passes to the Clemson defense as he did to Gamecock receivers.

With that said, I'm still sorry to see the guy go. He left in large part due to the bad treatment he got from the fans.

As one poster said perfectly, "Now we're only one night in Five Points from being without a quarterback."

Yeah . . . you guys can be tough on QB's. I heard about this guy one time that was leaving the stadium and had words with Blake Mitchell's sister.:eek:hmy:

No, go back and look at the records. Spurrier hasn't had a losing record since he's been there and I think his 4 year stretch of football recordwise is better than anyone else's in the past 85-90 or so years... Holtz did win two consecutive bowl games over tOSU, but he also went 0-11. Basically, if you were a senior on this Gamecock team under Spurrier, you would be the winninest group of seniors in Gamecock history... and you were ranked as high as #6 in the nation at one point during that stretch.

That is how bad Gamecock football tradition is.

Looks like they had 4 consecutive winning seasons from 87-90. Before then, you have to go back to the 30s.

I actually would agree with this.
