So I was cleaning up over on the wooded side of my house and ran into what I believe is a rat snake. I probably shouldn’t have killed it but my wife and daughter hate snakes and they saw it. So it had to be done. Killed it with an axe. Here are a couple of the pieces.

Does this look like a rat snake?

That snake was out grocery shopping for tonight's dinner minding it's own business.
I know. Had it only stayed in the woods I would have never seen it. And had my wife and daughter not seen it I probably would have ignored it. I feel kinda bad but they have this severe phobia of snakes.

Last time I saw a snake was when I was mowing my yard 3 years ago. It was just passing me by as I was mowing.

What kind? Large or small?

I've seen a few around my house over the years, but not too many. Once, when I lived at a different house, I walked into my garage and a huge one was hanging from the garage door rail on the ceiling. We almost had to move after that episode. lol.

I would have sold that house in 30 minutes and paid the moving company whatever they wanted.

My wife had the same mindset. It took some smooth talking to convince her otherwise. Lol.

Now it’s pretty much understood that if we see one in the yard I have to eliminate it.

Sad. Those are incredibly beneficial to have around. They keep the disease carrying animals (like mice and rats) at bay.

I have a cat that kills about 3 mice a week. Sometimes, she'll bring it to me & lay it on the patio.

I just wish they'd get that dang moe I have out in the front yard.....it seems like it doesn't want to leave.

I know. I’m pretty sure there are more around. I tried to tell my wife the things they eat are likely worse than the snake.

Just wait till the wife sees the 1st mouse?
I've been there too. lol. I had one in my current home after we first moved in. It was quite the episode.

I walked into the kitchen and I heard a rattling noise. I looked up at the ceiling and thought to myself, that sounds like a mouse in the attic, but I couldn't quite tell where it was coming from. As my eyes slowly came down from the ceiling, I caught a glimpse of the stove. My wife made cookies earlier that night and left them out. Standing on two feet on the cookie sheet having a feast was, you guessed it, a mouse. lol.

When it saw me, it scampered into the hall closet.

Next, this is pretty much what happened.

As I was pushing aside the coats so I could see, the thing jumped out at me. It was quite unexpected and I'm pretty sure I screamed like a girl. :)

I ended up finally trapping it in the bathroom, but it was quite the adventure.

Yep looks like a rat snake. A shame you had to kill it. I live really close to a wooded area but I've only seen 1 snake while mowing. Little 12 inch garter snake. I let him go about his way. I've had 1 mouse. Cats trapped it under the TV stand, then it ran under the couch. I set up a non lethal trap underneath the couch. Set him free a few miles down the road.

Thanks. I wasn't sure until I googled it. Next time I see one I plan to be a little more discrete about it and let it go about its business.

I've learned to recognize and relocate a few common harmless snakes. So far, I've only come across Corn and Dekay species here.

It's a black rat snake. I found one mowing the lawn last Summer. They are nice to have around but they don't look nice at all. I certainly understand the reaction.

I've always heard the best way to kill a snake is w/a hoe.....you cut it's head off.
Last one I had to kill I used a hoe. I was in college and dropping my now wife off after a date. Her mom was in the house screaming at us to not come to the front porch, finally found out why when we saw the snake up there. My intention was to use the hoe to pick it up and move it, but it was attacking the end so I finally just came down and decapitated it.
