some of those acts were head scratchers. why is Swift and Miley even there? I just thought the show was really lacking. they didn't need to do any current cast skits. I thought it was ok, but nothing great. chevy does look pretty rough, but i'm still picturing him as Fletch and Griswold. i think he regrets leaving after only one season.

Best cast imo was when Bill Murray joined the originals, minus Chevy. John Belushi was my all-time favorite. I was also a big Farley fan as he was like the second-coming of Belushi. Just so sad they died so young, and in such similar circumstances. And Eddie, Eddie Murphy was SNL during the early '80's. He did some brilliant comedy on SNL. I was really hoping for more from him tonight.

Farley was pretty sad. Everyone afterwards pretty much said they all saw that the same thing that had happened with Belushi was coming but just couldn't stop it.

vh1 classic had all the episodes on and i recorded a bunch of them. i think Bill murry playing the club singer is pure money. that dude is still hilarious. i also think Norm McDonald is really funny.

His era was my favorite and I've been watching from the beginning. I don't think SNL has been on a steady decline. I just think the show has had peaks and valleys over the decades.

i think that's pretty much bound to happen when a show has to rotate its cast and writers as much as they do.

I think Hartman had a lot of funny left in him, if not in acting then at least in voice work.

(Or at the absolute least, he would have run a hilarious Twitter account.)

You should see the bridges that were burned with Norm McDonald.

Norm cane back as a host after being booted from the cast. I remember his monologue joking about how he wasn't funny enough to be in the cast before but now he's funny enough to host the show.

How is the Californians skit popular?

Or at least popular enough for an anniversary show?

The first few times they did The Californians were hilarious. Then they overdid it and it kind of lost its charm.

Speaking of overdoing things, does ANYONE think Garth and Kat are funny? They've probably appeared on the show 15-20 times, and I've literally never laughed once. Obviously some people must like them to keep bringing them back.

I fast forward through them every time.

I don't see what would warrant a Californians sketch. People with bad accents giving directions on some fake daytime soap opera? meh.

If you are a fan of SNL at all, I highly, highly recommend you read The Chris Farley Show. It's a biography made up of stories compiled by his brother as told by his closest friends (so largely the SNL cast) and family. It's amazing.

Was really good of what I saw. The Californians skit was horrible. Haven't watched the last hour yet

I agree. The only part I laughed at was Betty White and Bradley Cooper making out at the end of it.

At the end of the show, Lorne Michaels looked ready to cry. It was awkward for Steve Martin because it looked like Lorne blew him off on a handshake, but I think LM was just really emotional. He had the five year hiatus when the originals left, but SNL was/is his baby. He's been there for 35 of the 40 seasons.

I thought she did it well. I really wanted Paul Simon to sing Wrecking Ball when he came out.

I thought she did it admirably as well. It's not Hendrix doing All Along the Watchtower by any means, but it makes you wonder what would happen if she ever got real writers and stopped singing about the kiddy stuff pop tweens love today. Nobody can deny she can flat sing (look up her cover of Jolene,) but it's not like she has Disney to push her anymore regardless of what she does.

I liked it but there's no reason Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, or Taylor Swift should have been there. All 3 were awful.

The Jon Lovitz gag was funny, and was a good end to an emotional bit.

The lovitz bit was great.

Kanye was the only one of the three that should've been there. Lots of people don't like him, but what he did/continues to do for Hip Hop is immeasurable. Had one of the best album runs of any individual or band in the 2000's and produced tons of killer songs for others as well. You could argue only Eminem was more influential in the 2000's, and sadly we can't get Eminem on SNL anymore probably.

It's definitely inside baseball but I get a chuckle because the directions thing is a real part of life there.

Not worth an ongoing skit though

Apparently Eddie Murphy was supposed to be Bill Cosby mixing a cocktail behind a bar during the Celebrity Jeopardy and decided not to. That's why he didn't have a bigger part in the show.
