So did we drop out of the top 25 this weekend in recruiting?

what? i've been reading for a week or so now ... with the budget crunch and all, i thought i'd see how all this coaching money is being spent. frankly, i'm not impressed at all.

They aren't miracle workers. They have had only a month to build relationships with some of these players that have known other coaches for 2-3 years now. What do you really expect??? Secondly, some of the talent Phil had recruited isn't what CLK needs in his philosophy. Yea, we I will contest that it is really exciting to get the "dream team" but allow them to properly do their job. Scrutinize them next year when they have had at least 12 months to build relationships with players, but for now let it be. It really is out of their control at this point.

Fair enough. His function isn't to impress in February 09.

Well all we keep hearing is that Lane will save us and how he has only been on the job since December but there Chizik is recruiting better and he has been on the job since when?...Exactly...While I do not think the hire was bad by any means, I do feel like we are not doing what we need to do on the recruiting front...We have a couple of days and a lot can change between now and then and I sure hope it does...It is all a waiting game now

Coach O is the captain of the recruiting boat.

aside from a few exceptions, auburn is making hay at the expense of troy, alabama a&t, etc.

well.lane has only been head coach since december and the whole staf wasnt finalized til liek late january so how can u expect us to have a top notch recruiting calss for this year?

I don't know. Maybe because we were in the top 15 before Kiffin was hired? With that said, we still have a shot at finishing decent.

when you change coaching staffs, you might (depending on your mental acumen) expect to lose alot of your current commits - half the kids commit to coaches, the other half to the school. this talk about where we were before kiff was hired is pointless...

We can agree to disagree on this. I strong recruiter should be able to salvage a top 15 class. I do understand that he may not be able to put the exact class together that he would if he started the class, and I also would not expect him to improve it too much. I would expect him to make up for any of the losses with gains though.

I still think we have a strong recruiting staff, and I'm not sold that we finsih as lousy as it's looking.

i'm not sure we disagree except for thinking it looks lousy. i'm happy with a top15 and thrilled with top 10. currently, we're 11th on the avg star rating on commitments that we have - not saying i'm a huge fan of star ratings either. we'll be fine.

With all the visitors we have had we shouldn't panic. There is no way we can get them all. We will wind up with at least 24 signees.

If you look at the numbers, we would need a bunch of surprises on NSD to get to 24. I think we end up with closer to 20.

The negativity is killing me. We have a guy that studied under Pete Carroll as our head man. His dad who is possibly the greatest defensive mind in football and two national recruiters of the year in college football. The remainder of the staff i.e Thompson, Gran, etc. just got here, and Cregg and Chaney were not even looking at high school talent in their former jobs. To ask this group of coaches to come in here and either maintain or improve on this year's class is a bit much. Look at the excitement they created in just their hirings. These guys didn't forget everything they know about the game in the last few weeks. They just need the ample time to put together a game plan. Let's be realistic here. Now if we had black unis, we would probably land the number one class. (Just trying to lighten the mood)

yeah I really don't get the negativity the last two days either. We had a lot of visitors last week, but I really didn't expect any commits out of it, especially with NSD only 3 days away. Why commit now when you can just sign in a few days.

I also think Kiffin could have had a top 15 class if he was content with just keeping the players we had commited and going after a few that weren't as highly coveted. But he decided to gamble and get as many top recruits to visit as possible. I don't have a problem with that since the reward could have been, and still might be, great. If UT had been content with stealing 1 or 2 top recruits and keeping their commits, their class might be perceived as better. But if several of those recruits don't fit the system then what good is it.

I'm still fairly optimistic because from what I can tell from posts on this site we still got a shot with

Marlon Brown
Alshon Jeffery
Teague
Oku
Stokes
Eddie Lacy
Nukeese Richardson
Sam Montgomery
Janzen Jackson
Darren Myles
Peter White
Kendall Kelly
Tana Patrick

Am I wrong about any and did I miss any?

Some of those are quite a long shot. Janzen Jackson has never sounded like he was actually considering UT.

I don't expect us to get more than 1 or 2 of those guys. Maybe Brown or Oku, possibly Stokes. Outside shot at Montgomery or Myles.

Not saying they all choose us, but they havent eliminated us, and most have said Tennessee has given them something to think about. I hear conflicting reports about Jackson's interest, so I included him.

In the end I think we end up the bridesmaid much more times than the bride, but I like that we shot that far up a lot of top notch recruits' lists considering that this staff has only had a relationship with many of them for only a couple months.

And I think we have a good shot at Oku, Brown, Myles, Teague, Lacy, Stokes, and Jeffrey.

Let our Coaching staff go to work and when the kids see the results on the field then we will land more players. We had more talent than Auburn last year. Worse coaching. We aren't filling as many slots as they are and they can almost guarantee PT. JMO

For us being at 21 according to rivals doesn't bother me. I have a hunch we land a few good ones. We are really only needing a WR, maybe, we might have a good crew when they get on the same page. (who knows) A QB which we won't get and I doubt Crompton will come around but who knows. This class wasn't goin to help us as much as everyone thought. We are solid on D. O-line will be better, they can't get worse anyway. Hardesty and Creer will carry the load and we don't have to worry about Foster. We were only a few plays away from being an 8-4 team. The talent is there. 2 less Foster fumbles we win UCLA and Aub. Oh and Wyoming who only scored on picks. WE ARE NOT THAT BAD IN THE TALENT AREA! IMO
