So Dobbs will also play Baseball for UT?

My post had baseball all over it and didn't mention a damn thing about football. With that being said, yes I think he could be a really good QB as well. No? Care to explain your redneck dikheadish comment?

I don't think he was being dickish. I think he was trying to say that if Dobbs is good enough to be a starting SEC QB, it's in our best interest if he's focused on football. Not that he couldn't do both and excel, but it takes a once in a generation sort of athlete to do that. Throw in his scholastic goals, and I'd venture it's never been done.

Think about Hunter (pre-injury). He decided to focus on football even though he was a good enough track athlete that he'd have a shot at competing in the olympics. He chose football.

This. As an engineer I can vouch that regardless of how smart you are, engineering requires a boatload of TIME. I hope he can do it but I can't see how unless he does like I did and never sleeps lol.

Seriously. I'm a UT engineering grad, and I used to get so mad/jealous of the people who didn't have to put in the hours we did. It wasn't always hard (although many times it was), but it was ALWAYS time consuming. I came in with 36 credit hours allowing me to pretty much focus on math and science courses and avoid the freshman gen ed stuff, and I still had so many hours of crap I didn't know what to do.

Dude has a history Of dikish post IMO, so I'm gonna side with him being a dik in this one.

Having lived with an AE major for most of my undergrad years at UT, it would take someone with extreme mental toughness to take on that degree and play football and baseball, and do all three well.

Let's see, he wants to major in aerospace engineering and be the starting quarterback and shortstop for Tennessee. We'll see how long that lasts.

Donovan McNabb played Football and Basketball for 'Cuse.
Julius Peppers did the same for the Heels.
and Tony Gonzalez for Cal-Berkeley.

Kenny Lofton played Baseball and Basketball at Arizona.
So did Bob Gibson at Creighton.
and Tony Gwynn at San Diego State.
and Dave Winfield at Minnesota.

Todd Helton played football and baseball at Tennesee.
John Elway joined him at Stanford.
And Bo Jackson at Auburn.

Joshua Dobbs will be just fine. Looks like a great kid with a good head on his shoulders, lots of ambition and nice athleticism. Best member of the signing class IMO. Definitely the kind of young man I'm proud to see wearing Orange!

My fraternity "Little Brother" was Bert Ackermann, who was starting center for the VOLS in the early 60's. Bert was a Nuclear Engineering major and an Academic All-American. He later earned a PhD in Nuclear Engineering.

As in the scenario with Dobbs' meeting with Coach Jones and the dean of UT's engineering dept., Bowden Wyatt arranged for Bert to meet with the dean of the engineering dept. during his recruitment. It worked out just fine for Bert and I bet it will for young Mr. Dobbs.

More about Bert Ackermann here: Once a Vol, Always a Vol!: The Proud Men of Volunteer Nation - Gus Manning, Haywood Harris - Google Books

I love that CBJ is seeking out high character young men who understand the importance of student in student athlete. Dobbs and others like him will represent Tennessee well.

I'm all for him giving it a try. Toby Gearhart was one of those crazy smart dudes that could handle being a two sport athlete. I can't remember a QB in recent history who played two sports though.

The thing is, he shown be focused on whatever is in HIS best interest, and that is up to him.

Maybe he is among the dwindling number of players that sees college athletics as an opportunity for experiences and an education. Maybe he actually gets it that this is not a tryout for the NFL.

If he wants to try to play baseball, I wish him the very best of luck.

Todd Helton did it for a little bit. Most two sport athletes figure out which sport they are best at and then drop the one where they are under performing.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. What I actually said was "I don't think he was being dickish. I think he was trying to say that if Dobbs is good enough to be a starting SEC QB, it's in our best interest if he's focused on football." The he in that sentence was another poster that I was translating for. Personally, I think the kid should do whatever is best for him. I was one of the posters who said if the kid was serious about engineering, I'd have no problem and wish him the best if he went to a place like Stanford (top 5 engineering program). I got roasted for that. Did not care. I believe every one of these kids should do what they think is best for them, and they don't always make decisions based on my priorities...hopefully they set their own.
