Memphis fans need to dial into reality. If they are actually remotely considering Scott Drew, Lon Kruger would be a Godsend. RC Johnson and Team FedEx screwed this up from the start by operating under the delusional belief that Tim Floyd was a viable option. That mistaken line of thinking led to them burning two plus days pursuing a coach who had zero interest in their job.
Hat,
Since a "wow" hire isn't coming. What do you think about the idea of hiring Pastner, paying him $1 mill. a year + incentives +huge buyout? Kid can recruit, works his rear off, and knows basketball. He will be a star in 5-8 years. What does Memphis have to lose hiring him?
You people are acting as if Cal left to take the Mississippi State job.
There aren't that many "bigger" jobs right now and they don't come open very often. If Urban Meyer left Florida for Notre Dame, does that make the position in Gainesville a "stepping stone?" Are the Miami Dolphins a "stepping stone" compared to the Alabama job? Did Kansas become a "stepping stone' job when Roy left for UNC? Memphis fans need a big dose of self esteem.NOt at all, but what's too keep another successful coach from going to another "bigger" job.
True, but Memphis fans are acting like it's Florida Atlantic basketball.
How are Reggie Theus and Lon Kruger not big names?I agree there but I think they are very disappointed in the search so far and have gotten even more down than they were when "the UK coach" (per CALISKING) left.
I think some thought they could woo a big name coach into Memphis and it looks like it won't happen. I think it was a little dose of reality.
Today was a very, very bad day for the Memphis coach search.
Here is why Scott Drew is not the Memphis coach right now, according to sources close to the negotiations.
Drew had an initial conversation with R.C. Johnson on Friday night. On Saturday, another conversation took place. The outline of a contract was discussed. Alan Graf, who was in communication with Drew throughout the day, kept telling Drew that he was the No. 1 guy and that Memphis was ready to get a deal done. Johnson, on the other hand, was sending different signals: “Hemming and hawing,” according to a source.
Meanwhile, Drew was under pressure from his athletic director, recruits and players who were calling to find out what was happening and whether he was going to Memphis. How could he be totally sure whether he was the No. 1 guy or not when the AD was “hemming and hawing?” Finally, Drew had enough and pulled out of the search. After he pulled out, Johnson made multiple attempts to call him back. But by then, it was done.
Whether you were in favor or against hiring Scott Drew at Memphis, this is not a coaching search running smoothly right now. In fact, its performance today appeared to be dysfunctional.
Anyone who thinks a day in which a program doesn't turn over the reigns to Scott Drew is a bad one isn't terribly well informed.
The Memphis message boards and comments sections have been lit up with talk of Reggie Theus. I am somewhat baffled by this. Theus coached in college for two years at New Mexico State. His second year, he went 25-9 with an NCAA bid (it didnt hurt that the conference tournament was on New Mexico States home floor that year). New Mexico State had three top-50 wins that year against Nevada, and twice over Utah State, all at home. In his first year, Theus went 15-14. He didnt stay long enough to prove whether he could recruit or not. He brought in some talented kids (albeit with big off-court problems) like Martin Iti and Herb Pope that other schools wouldnt touch, but that wouldnt give me a ton of confidence in his ability to recruit to Memphis.
This year alone, Scott Drew beat Providence, Arizona State, Washington State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Kansas, Texas, Georgetown and Virginia Tech. He signed a top-50 and two top-150 players for 2009, a top-50 and a top-100 player in 2008, a top-50 player in 2007 and three top-100 players in 2006.
Head-to-head, this is no comparison.
If he's backing Drew, chances are Wolken's some sort of religious zealot. That's about the extent of Drew's support base.FOr whatever reason Wolken was all over Drew's nuts and anti-Reggie Theus. I am not a big fan of Wolken regardless.
Here he is discussing the Reggie Theus vs Scott Drew argument:
