Social Media: Lies...Everywhere

To your point though...

My mom told me about some diatribe that Bill Cosby alledgly wrote about being old and tired of being tolerant and stuff (mostly about Islam). She was all "I'm surprised Bill Cosby wrote this.." And read it to me. I said "Mom, there is no way Bill Cosby wrote that." So I googled it and sure enough it was from some crotchety old Rep House member on a semi-racist soapbox circa 2006ish. I even ran across a statement from BC denying writing it.

I then had to tell my mother not to believe everything she sees on FB.

it is amazing what people will believe

There's one that comes around every so often about how dialing 112 instead of 911 will get police to respond faster.

I always post this article in response and the nonsense stops for a while.

Or the one about how typing in your ATM pin backwards will alert authorities if you're being mugged

I've been getting a lot of nonsense about the "Third Vatican Council" in my newsfeeds lately. Too bad it isn't happening.

The part that bothers me is that fact checking in these instances can usually be accomplished in 30 seconds

Basically social media has become a faster way to spread urban legends.

I hate to say it but a lot of the religious ones turn out to be complete crap. I'm not talking about the ones that are truly just some sappy story meant to make a point, but the ones that claim something in the Bible was proven or something of that nature.

And yes a quick check would tell them it was 100% bogus. I've become quite the buzzkill on many posts because in the comments I'll point out it's untrue and usually link to the proof. It's funny how mad that can make some people.
