Rainey Gaffin

Gaffin wasn't recruited as a pitcher. She was recruited as an outfielder and hitter. She pitched out of necessity due to injury and to attrition ... and ironically was the best pitcher on the staff for most of the last half of her career, which is when she pitched.

Same with Tarango. Wasn't recruited as a pitcher but was told she would pitch if needed and possibly get some mid-week games. But Gaffin wasn't recruited as a pitcher at all. Neither Gaffin nor Tarango were elite pitchers in high school, which is strange because Gaffin had one of the best dropballs I've ever seen.

They still pitched and hit

My 9 year just went to the pitcher and catcher camp last week. My wife told me that the coaches said they don't let their pitchers hit because of risk of injury. They have had teams hit the pitcher on purpose hoping for a injury.

Because they were recruited as hitters, not pitchers. They only pitched out of necessity. Gaffin wasn't recruited to pitch here AT ALL.

They still did both no matter what they were recruited to do period.

They need to get over that. That is just medieval thinking

Gaffin hit by pitch while batting in SEC Tournament. Broke her wrist. Likely kept us out of World Series.

How is that medieval? You make choices based on percentages. If you are relying on only 2 pitchers and 1 is good enough to hit 7th in the order you don't let her hit. You can find someone else to hit 7th. You don't risk getting her hurt and having only 1 pitcher left.

On the other hand, if that same pitcher is your BEST hitter and you feel you need her in the lineup to have any chance of making the WS then you let her hit.

How many reliable pitchers you have and how good of a hitter the pitcher in question is will determine whether or not she hits.
