By renaming the women's teams, history is being rewritten, and their stories are being blurred into that of the guys. If you ever want to take away the identity of a group, make their names vague and nondescript.

Women's sports had to scrap and fight before Title 9, and it hasn't been a bed of roses for all of them afterwards. Any young woman who played college sports (and I count my two daughters in this group) know that they are always #2 in funding, in scheduling, and pretty much in anything else, even when they have fan and admin support. And when they do have this support, too often it's like they're some sort of cute pets or something. They shouldn't have their identity subsumed into that of the guys as well.

If they had always been called Vols, then fine, no big whoop. But they have been called the Lady Vols, and to decide to change their name from Lady Vols definitely catches my attention.

Guess what, guys, this doesn't happen to you, or at least not very often, so you're not likely to recognize what's going on.

I'm way more likely to buy sports apparel with a Lady Vols BB or Lady Vols soccer or whatever logo than one with just "Vols" on it, if I'm showing support for a women's team, so please don't give me the crap about marketing with a single brand name. That pretty much falls into the category of peeing on my leg and telling me it's raining. (And I have a ton of UT football gear, so leave me out of the accusation about only supporting women's athletics.)

I'm fine with what Dave Hart is doing for the men's teams, but I'm suspicious as hell about his actions toward UT women's sports.

In the end, whatever he does, every single member of a women's sports team at UT will always be called a Lady Vol by me. As Government Mule signs, "And as always, go Lady Vols!" :clapping:

Your comments about the name change blurring or taking away their names or identity is absurd. UT athletes are athletes--period. You think Cierra Burdick is any different as a Vol as opposed to a Lady Vol? Don't be ridiculous. I get that there is loyalty among female fans to the name--we've had it for a long time and this is the South--but it is a bit antiquated.

There is loyalty from all the different athletes and past athletes to the name Lady Vols.
