Thats all nice and dandy but if you cant admit that our coaching staff has room for improvement then you need to pull your head out of the sand. I still think we have a good staff but some adjustments need to be made. One thing people need to realize is no coaching staff is perfect, but some staffs have the luxury of having great athletes to cover up some of the bad desicions they make. Our staff doesnt have that luxury. Every wrong move our staff makes at this point is magnified by the lack of talent and speed. If we continue to recruit like we are right now, this staff will get better without changing anything. Talent and speed is no doubt lacking but dont act like the coaches cant also improve. At this point all that is certain is Butch Jones and his staff are great recruiters and BJ came here with winning on his resume. Everything else is still up for grabs.

Can you dig it, SUCKA!!!!!!!!!!

Missouri was 5-7 last year and it took us 4OT to beat them - have you checked their win count this year? think its the same team?

Dude....ummm.....they beat us. And we had 1st, 2nd, 4th, round draft picks on offense not to mention undrafted free agents.

The defense is worse than last years!!!!
No. Not even with the schedule that we've played this year has it been worse than last year's defense. We were damn near at the bottom of every category last year including just damn near last place in red zone defense.

Just for the hell of it:
Total Defense 2012:Tennessee ranked #110 out of 124 teams. Surrendering an average of 471.3 YPG.
Total Defense 2013: Tennessee ranked #92 out of 124 teams. Surrendering an average of 434.3 YPG.
Passing Defense 2012: Rank:#114 giving up 282.5 YPG.
Passing Defense 2013: Rank #22 giving up 208.4 YPG.
Rushing Defense 2012: Rank #87 giving up 188.83 YPG.
Rushing Defense 2013: Rank #114 giving up 225.90 YPG

So our rushing defense is a wee bit worse our passing defense is quite a bit better and now for my personal favorite Red Zone conversion percentage:

2012: We ranked a scintillating #122 out of 124 teams allowing our opponents to convert 91.49% of the time.
2013:Rank #21 allowing 74.42% of trips to the red zone to be converted to scores.

Agree 100% but take a number. You are right but it isn't most it is just a small few that keep this stirred. Maybe we should start a crap stirrer thread for all those posters that state the sky is falling.

Or a Sky is Falling Forum...so that they could sit in a corner and argue with themselves. Then some of us could visit from time to time to help coach them back to reality. Internet Fan Therapy Sessions.

We should also start a "The Sun'll Come Out Tomorrow" Forum.

the way recruits look at teams, coaches and games varies quite drastically to how the knee jerk dramatic crowd reacts. They see why we are getting run around and know that each and every one of them can come in and get in the 2 deep on defense.

Exactly my point. None of our recruits so far seem to freak out over anything, so I'm just fine until the recruits start to bail. Then we've got a major problem.

Besides, wgaf what the fan base on here thinks? I'm more concerned what the recruits think, and they all seem to still be solidly on board.

I think most recruits are looking for playing time not a spot on a bench watching others play. Tennessee is ripe for star players and CBJ is picking some good ones, imo

My bad on the winner - and yes, what talent we had was on offense - which is why I am saying our D has improved - though not as much as I would wish for - but then I would like a lot of things that are going to take time to develop.

Recruits are definitely attracted to playing time but only if its going to be in a winning program No top recruit is going to come just because he will get to play on a crappy team. So it would seem that what the recruits are seeing is that they will get playing time on a team that will become a powerhouse in 2 years time.

The few that keep the "pot stirred" are the ones who call out the "I've got a feeling" posters. "I've got this feeling that we will beat Mizzou-they haven't played anyone that doesn't have injuries" or the "I've got a feeling we match up better with AU than Mizzou."
People just need to realize that a 6-6 season would be great this year.
I think it is premature to say we will be a top 10 team in 2-3 years. Definitely not in 2 years, but there might be a chance in 3 years.
We also better bring our "A" game against Vandy or we will get beat. I wouldn't chalk up a victory before we play.

Some people seem to forget that we installed a brand new offensive system this year (remember when Tommy Tuberville tried to install the spread at Auburn or Rich Rod tried to at Michigan?) and a new defense (went back to the 4-3). For installing new systems on both sides of the ball, we haven't been too bad.

I go away for the weekend, knowing that Auburn is going to dominate on Saturday (but secretly hoping for an upset). I come back and its as if the friggen sky is falling because we lost to yet another top 10 team. We are doing the right things, you silly fans however act like turning a totally crappy program into a legendary one can be done near instantaneously and on willpower alone. First you start drinking koolaid and thinking we can "dominate" (not
just beat) top 10 teams, then run around like headless chickens and threaten to commit ritual fan suicide because we got owned as expected. I see some of you idiots even saying KY is going to own us for sure.
NEWSFLASH to some of you people - UT IS NOT A TOP 10 TEAM THIS YEAR no matter who is
coaching it. Considering this schedule and the lack of depth we have at almost any position, its amazing we have done what we have done so far.

Now I know we all hoped Coach Jones
would make some major improvements this year in spite of the garbage heap he was given and the nations most brutal schedule. IMHO he has done so. Out of 10 games so
far, 5 have been Top 10 teams and 2 more have been Top 20. Astonishingly, we actually pulled off an upset of a #11 team and allllllmost did so for a #6. But we arent going to upset many or we would actually
BE a top 10 team.

I am happy with seeing our offense continue to grow and see that we have some really
decent possibilities next year at QB and receivers who can get open even if they havent yet learned to catch the ball. Defense needs some help but then its harder to gauge when they are on the field the whole
game against top teams with no replacements. Recruiting is phenomenal, considering our past couple of years.

Now Vandy is not going to be candy
this year and only has KY between us and game day but with us getting some rest after playing the friggen giant schedule I think we should be able to be up 3-7 against them and beat KY by 14. That is a real test for us but as decent as Vandy is this year, I think
its going to seem like running downhill after what we have been through the last 3 weeks.

At the beginning of the year, any clear eyed analyst would be very happy with the
prospect of 6-6 and one big upset. Of course, we thought Auburn would be a walkover this year and nope, even they kickass. So considering - if we go 6-6 this year and head to a bowl game, give all the true freshmen and people time to actually learn new systems, recruit like we are doing
right now - in 2-3 years this team WILL be a top 10 team again and a very solid program. Jones is not Dooley part Deux (he has been a winner on his own and not just the son of one). Until then, grow the heck up and temper your expectations with some reality.

Agree but don't waist your breath. Those guys with negative comments have an extra chromosome. No other way to explain the
dumb*** comments regarding this team and coaching staff!

You are right...some of you are idiots!! You go away for a weekend and close your eyes!! Please look at what you are saying!! The defense is worse than last years!!!! I guess you are ok with losing all the time. For the salaries these coaches are being paid, we need a little more effort on defense. Oh yes, Jancek was fired at Georgia because he had no clue about defense......Maybe you can go away for another weekend and all this will just go away.....for me, I want to see IMPROVEMENT for the millions the coaches are getting paid!!!!!!
shhhhhh you will be called an Idiot for thinking Tennessee Football should be competitive (Like we was in the South Alabama / Western Kentucky Games )

NEWSFLASH. WHO HERE SAID THEY WERE? Some of us are just absolutely DISGUSTED by the FAILURE to get more out of the available talent and especially on D.

But go ahead with your delusional thinking and strawmen...

Now I know we all hoped Coach Jones would make some major improvements this year in spite of the garbage heap he was given and the nations most brutal schedule. IMHO he has done so.
Yeah, you get it... right? Getting blown out like FCS homecoming fodder 3 weeks in a row and especially by Mizzou and Aub... is NOT a sign of "major improvements".

Out of 10 games so far, 5 have been Top 10 teams and 2 more have been Top 20. Astonishingly, we actually pulled off an upset of a #11 team and allllllmost did so for a #6.
Hyperbole much? UF has now been revealed to have been vastly overrated. MU is NOT a team with elite talent. Some of us (ahem) said USCe was a team with as many roster issues as UT had and should be a winnable game.

I am happy with seeing our offense continue to grow and see that we have some really decent possibilities next year at QB and receivers who can get open even if they havent yet learned to catch the ball.
Me too. The OL has underperformed but there has been growth.

Defense needs some help but then its harder to gauge when they are on the field the whole game against top teams with no replacements.
No it isn't. Fatigue isn't beating UT. In spite of the volume of those claiming it is all "speed"... it isn't. This is not a D with elite talent at every position or depth at every position. It is also not a well coached D right now. You can make all the excuses you want but these guys are NOT too slow to fill a gap consistently. They are not too slow to set the edge and turn plays back inside.

At the beginning of the year, any clear eyed analyst would be very happy with the prospect of 6-6 and one big upset.
Sorry. But no. Elite coaches get the most out of their roster. Six wins is what Dooley did under similar circumstances against a similar schedule. Six wins just leaves questions about the ability of this staff to compete in the SEC.

Of course, we thought Auburn would be a walkover this year and nope, even they kickass.
Auburn has more talent right now than UT. Mizzou does not... UF is a train wreck. UGA was missing much of their O.... Six wins is "average". "Average" coaching will not get UT back to the top of the SEC or national polls.

So considering - if we go 6-6 this year and head to a bowl game, give all the true freshmen and people time to actually learn new systems, recruit like we are doing right now - in 2-3 years this team WILL be a top 10 team again and a very solid program.
Not unless the D is getting coached better than this one.

Jones is not Dooley part Deux (he has been a winner on his own and not just the son of one).
The combined record of the teams he beat at Cincy was 136-162. He never beat a ranked team while there. He was spanked by Dooley's second team. In three years at Cincy, he beat 6 FBS teams that finished with a winning record out of the 21 FBS teams he beat.

I'm not saying he isn't a good coach... the right coach.. or anything of the sort. I am saying that his record isn't as impressive once you really begin to look at the competition he beat.

Until then, grow the heck up and temper your expectations with some reality.
I AM realistic. THE RULE for new, good coaches is they make an immediate impact on a team's play and win total. Saban to Bama was even an improvement over the previous year in spite of the ULM loss.

If you want to get back to 8 win seasons and middling bowl games then "average" is plenty good enough. Talent will get you back to that level. If you want to see championships then you need to see elite coaching on a CONSISTENT basis along with great talent. We aren't seeing anything in that realm on D right now. Maybe they'll improve... but they're going to have to.

I don't believe most are upset that we are losing, but rather that we aren't even being competitive these past 3 games.
I expected us to lose all 3, but not witness these embarrassing performances. We have a huge talent issue, no speed on defense, and not much depth. This is well known.
However, we have enough to play better against mizzou or auburn than what we did. We gave up more points to auburn than Washington state, Ark state, or fau.
Its silly reading pregame about how mizzou hasn't played anyone, or we matchup well with so and so, or auburn hasn't played a good defense, and then post game you have "it was expected ".
I believe butch is the Guy 100%. He's definitely working with a big talent disadvantage. But its not unreasonable for fans to expect to be more competitive.

sjt18 Bud Your wasting Your Time. The same Bunch of guys defended Dofus till death done them apart! Most have never played a down of Football and don't understand we are not fundamentally a good coached team. It's so easy for weak fans to blame the players rather than a sales man that tells them that Yugo will be as good as a new Honda in a little while. We sent AJ on a blitz once, and Cam once Both Times we destroyed them. When we play chiken little Defense we get Destroyed! Vandy will surprise some on here but Not me. They are well coached!

There are a lot of misinformed people on this site, that's for sure. They're either completely out of touch with what it takes to build a championship football team or they're simply part of the instant gratification crowd or both. UT finally has a championship caliber coach who will do what it takes to build the VOLS back and yet we have a ton of yahoos on here claiming we're going to go 8-3 or 9-2! Idiots. We're right on course- right where most of the analysts had predicted we would be -and we got a major win against SC and we beat Georgia up and down the field.
Add a couple of strong recruiting seasons and we'll be back, but it doesn't help to have the volnation.com clan going against the home team on a daily basis.
We have a great school and a great team to cheer for - if you don't have the patience to watch Butch build the VOLS back brick by brick, then move along.

Go VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Use hyperbole much to prove the same BS points the majority of other posters on here are making to avoid the fact that the team has been embarrassed 3 weeks in a row?

Not a single rational person thought this team was top 10 before the season.

Some just expected better effort from the players throughout the year to avoid one humiliating loss after another.

Seemed that expectation of the putting the Dooley years of laying down and taking a beating behind us was too much to expect from Jones and his best staff in America.

ok Pro, just name 2 posters who said we would be 8-3 or 9-2 ? You are reaching for excuses because we won against SC doesn't prove squat when we get blown out the next 3 games. I keep hearing this Championship coach you yahoos keep talking about who is it? some guy who beat northern and southern schools in the MAC? We fans do not have to be weak and sit on our hands and have a man crush on the staff like some of you. We should always demand that UT be Competitive and in the top 3 in the EAST every Season. Anything Less Is failure on us as Fans! If we are OK with Getting blown out somethings wrong with the culture! Guess what ? we are not ok with it and you should be ashamed to even consider your self a fan if you are! I think every fan on here would agree that if our players Compete for 4 quarters and our coaches strive to give us the best possible game plan we will back them at the gates of Hell!
