Coach Ed "Straight Arrow" Gennero.

He took over a Texas State Armadillos squad that was devastated by sanctions back in the early 1990s. They lost numerous scholarship players, and had to play ironman football. After tying with Kansas, he led the Armadillos to a surprise victory over then Number 1 ranked Texas with his star 34 year old quarterback freshman Paul Blake and a female kicker.

That's pretty cool. Fascinating, in fact.

I judge coaches by the quality of their work, not the school they coach at.

You are on to something with Doeren. What is he, 20-4 with NIU right now?

He'll definitely get a big offer one day if he keeps that up.

21-4

Grew up as DC with Bielema at Wisconsin. I can't say enough how good of a job he has done. Reminiscent of Peterson-Hawkins at Boise. Kill had a good thing going and he has improved from that point forward. Had 2 returning starters on defense last year and still finished 11-3.

He doesn't bullshiz around either:

"If it does, it does. I've lived by (the idea that) if you do a great job where you are and opportunities come your way, and it may not be the right one," he said. "I think that's really important. I have a great job, my family is happy, I like the kids I coach, and they take care of me here. I'm not leaving here for something that I don't think is better than what I have.

"I really have enjoyed the process at NIU and they gave me my first chance to be a head coach. So I'm going to do everything I can to make this the best school that I can make it. If something comes along that I know if better for me and my family, I'm going to have to listen to it. But we're not there yet."

Won't be there much longer. Will be a solid coach for whoever hires him.

Top Five Legit List:
Petrino
Smart
Tuberville
Cutcliffe
Mullen

I just don't see Gruden or Patterson happening in the end, although I would be ecstatic to get either. Something makes me think it will be Smart due to his ties to Hart and if he is the man then the Kiffin mattress burnings will seem like child's play.

In order of preference:

1.) Bobby Petrino
2.) Dan Mullen
3.) Kyle Whittingham
4.) Mark Hudspeth
5.) Gus Malzahn

This is a realistic list, IMO. If Jon Gruden does not happen, which it probably will not, Tennessee is going to have a hard time getting anything better. Not because the program isn't good enough, but more so because coaches like Patterson, Peterson, Strong, Etc... have ties to the players and programs they are coaching at. Alot of coaches, at least the ones worth having, don't just jump ship at the first sound of the money truck. They have made commitments to their current programs and feel an obligation to stick with them. Dan Mullen may fall under this very category. It is going to be a tough pull. I say if Gruden turns UT down, go after Petrino. You hope that he has learned his lesson in Arkansas and UT reaps the reward. Since that probably will not happen, UT needs to go after a young, high energy, aggressive, successful, complete football coach at the mid major level. Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and Jim Tressel all started somewhere. It can happen at UT as well. Mark Hudspeth, Doeren, and Gus Malzahn would all be viable options.

I watched him completely rebuild North Alabama as I only live about 30 minutes from there. At the time, UNA was nowhere near the program it was when they won 3 straight national titles. Hudspeth came in and made that program relevant again.

Wonder if Kathy Ireland has any eligibility left?
